(Live Load =7.5kN/m2+ Floor Finish Load =1.875 kN/m2)
The Analysis & Design of Composite slab is carried out at construction stage (i.e during casting of
concrete slab ) and composite stage (i.e concrete achivied the strength )
Figure-2 ( Arrangement of loads for maximum bending moments)
Analysis & Design:
Refer to clause 2.2.3.1 of BS-5950-Part 4,
The minimum construction load is mentioned as 1.5 kN/m2
For Spans less than 3m, the construction load shall be increased to not less than 4.5kN/m2 / Lp
Lp = 2.01 m
Construction Load = 2.239 kN/m2
Partial Saftey Factors for Loads (ɣf): Ref. Table-1 of BS-5950 (part-4), for DL + Super Imposed Load
and DL + Construction Load combinations are as mentioned below
Type of Loads Load factor (ɣf):
Dead Load 1.4
Super Imposed Load 1.6
Construction Load 1.6
Design Check fof Profiled Deck Panel at construction stage:
During casting of concrete over metal deck, the wet concrete weight along with self weight
of decking and reinforcement bars shall be resistabed only by bending strength of Decking
(wet concrete density is 2400 kg/m3, concrete density of 25 kN/m3 is including reinforcement weight)
Load Load (kN/m2) Load factor (ɣf): Factored Load (kN/m2)
Decking 0.1 1.4 0.14
Concrete 3.8 1.4 5.32
Construction Load 2.239 1.6 3.582
Total Load 'W' 6.139 Total Load 'Wu' 9.042
Refer to figure-2 showing pattern loading, the ultimate moments are
Maximum +ve moment (Sagging moment ) = 0.094 * Wu*Lp^2
1.708 kN.m/m
Maximum -ve moment (Hogging moment ) = 0.117 * Wu*Lp^2
2.126 kN.m/m
Ultimate Moment capacity of Deck Panel = 0.87 * fy * Sx
6.066 kN.m/m
Ultimate moment capacity of panel is higher than ultimate moments, Hence OK
Check for deflection:
For Continuous beams of spans 2 or more, maximum deflection due to pattern loading
may be determined from following equation ( cl. 5.6.3.2 of BS-5950-Part-6 )
Delta = 3 * W * Lp ^ 4 / ( 384 * E * Ix ) 0.7625 cm
7.625 mm
Span / Deflection 263.60 < Span / 240, OK
Bending Resistance of Composite Slab:
The ultimate bending moments under Composite stage are as calculated below.
Maximum Sagging Moment = 1.4 Wdl * Lp ^2 / 12 + 1.6 * Wll * Lp ^ 2/ 10
7.898395 kN.m (Wdl and Wll are Dead Load & Live Loads)
Maximum Hogging moment near support = 1.4 * Wdl * Lp^2/10+1.6*Wll*Lp^2/9
8.939395 kN.mm
The sagging moment resistance will be provided by the the concrete in compression and
composite panel acting as tension reinforcement
Full shear connection is assumed. Hence, compressive force Ncf in concrete is equal to
steel yield force Npa.
Ncf = Npa = Ap * fyp / ɣap = 292.8 kN / m width
Where,
Ap = Effective area per meter width
fyp = Yield strength of steel
ɣap = Partial safety factor (1.15)
Ncf = 0.36 * fck * b * x
x = Ncf / ( b * 0.36 * fck ) = 32.53333 mm
The N.A lies above steel decking
The design resistance Mp is given by
Mp = Ncf (dp - 0.42 x) = 24.69358 kN.m > 7.30 kN.m, hence OK
Check for Hogging Moment (-ve moment) resistance:
Hogging moment of resistance is provided by the tension reinforcement provided near top
and the the concrete in the bottom part in compression. The required tension reinforcement
for hogging moment is calculated based on IS-456-200 / SP-16
Total depth of slab including decking : 177 mm
Profile depth 52 mm
Average depth of slab : 151 mm
Concrete depth obove decking : 125
Main Reinforcement shall be centrally placed above decking
Diameter of top reinforcement 8 mm
Effective depth of slab 88.5 mm
Mu 8.939395 kN.m / m width
Mu / bd^2 1.141357
Refer to table-3 of SP-16 for M30 concrete, and Fy = 500 for reinforcement,
% of steel required = 0.368
Reinforcement required 325.68 mm^2 / m
Provide 8mm dia reinforcement bar @ 175mm c/c in Both ways
Area provided = 287.mm^2 / m > 279mm^2 / m, Hence OK
