WHAT IS HUMAN RESOURCE


TRAINING AND
DEVELOPMENT?
Unit 1 - is divided in to three sessions.

 Session 1 –
 the concept of human resource management with respect to the
basic concepts of HRM.

 Session 2 –
 focuses on the concepts of HRD, HR and their importance.

 Session 3-
 looks at the relationship of HRT&D with other organizational activities

 Define Human Resources


 HRM and its Importance
 Who perform the HR function?
 HR activities
 The process of the utilizing human resources to achieve organizational
objectives and those of its employees.

 HRM as the discipline involving the effective management of human


resources.

 A key factor in helping organizations to adapt to environmental


changes.

 HRM is directed at higher productivity through organizational


effectiveness and enhancing the development of the organization’s
employees as well.
 An organization, in which the individual can grow and develop, may be
termed a ‘healthy’ organization.

 The primary aim of human resource management is to make


organizations to more healthy and more effective,

 and reach towards excellence which can be achieved through HR


satisfaction, quality of work life, higher productivity and readiness for
challenges of change
Who performs the functions of HRM

 Small scale firm-by the owner himself/herself

 Medium scale firm -by operating managers

 Large scale firm-

 A human resource or personnel department/unit, responsible for directing


the HR functions.
 One or more human resource specialists normally staff such a
department/unit. These specialists are trained in one or more areas of
human resource management.

 Rewards
 Employee Training & Development
 Maintaining positive relationship
 Employee Maintenance-
 Employee maintenance done by the administration and
monitoring, in other words, facilitating of work place safety,
health and welfare are all policies to retain a competent
workforce.
 HRM activities discussed above are designed
 to attract individuals to organizational tasks,
 to motivate the workforce,
 to develop the workforce and
 to maintain them by solving conflicts
 ironing out tensions at work.

 HRM activities therefore aim to achieve two sets of objectives,

 1. which will enhance employee performance and


 2. improve the effectiveness of the organization.

 Concept of HRD
 Importance of HR T&D
Concept of HRD

 Human Resource Development means ,


 a continuous process of upgrading the skills, knowledge and ability of
employees leading to the overall development of the organization itself.

 Human Resource Development-HRD has three basic functions


 1. PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
 2. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
 3. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Importance of HR T&D
 Human resource T&D is an important element among the function of
HRD.

 It is a continuous learning process designed for higher productivity.

 Suppose we ask the question “why have HR T & D at all”?


 The answer is obvious: its main aim is to improve the performance of an
organization and enable it to achieve its objectives. This stresses the
importance of HR T & D.
“Hire – Qualified People”, is being replaced with

“hire then qualify people for their jobs”.

What do you understand by the above saying?

 Training and Development can be described as


 “a learning activity which leads to acquisition of specific knowledge and skills for the
purpose of occupation or task which is necessary for the development of both the
individual and the organization”.

 On the other hand, it is a systematic process which aims to ensure that organization
has effective managers necessary for its present and future needs.

• It is concerned generally with improving the performance of present employees,


giving them opportunities for training and development and
• ensuring as far as possible, that a succession planning system is activated in the
organization

T&D by its very nature is related to various other activities activated by the human resource
department
Relationship with Job Analysis

 Job Analysis and the nature of the job and its requirements
 When we consider job analysis the question we have to ask is,

 “what must a trainee be taught in order to help him perform a job


effectively?”.

 As such the information analysis is directly related to the training


process
 i.e. to select trainees & identify their needs.
Relationship with the staffing function
 Staffing also has a direct relationship to training of human resources.

 If the organization hires personnel who already possess the required standard of
knowledge and skills to perform the job well,

 there will be less need for training and development programmes for the
purpose of upgrading the employee.

 On the contrary, if the company’s selection programme is weak and hires those
who have little skills and inadequate knowledge,

 more training and development programmes will be needed for the newly hired
employees to equip them the required expertise.
Relationship with the performance Appraisal
Several instances of how performance appraisal is related to training and
development can be identified as follows

 As a means of determining training needs for various organizational units


 As a basis for evaluating the worth of training programmes.
 As a means of improving proficiency of the employed by the providing
each of them with feedback regarding their performance during
periodical appraisal interviews with their supervisors.
Relationship with organizational development

 A part of its larger objective of improving the competence of all the units
of the total organization.

 Some of the T&D techniques used by the organizational development


specialists are,
 Organizational Grid,
 Survey Feedback,
 Management By Objectives (MBO) Etc.
