What is packaging

Packaging refers to the process of designing and producing the materials used to contain, protect,
transport, and promote products. Packaging is an essential component of the supply chain and is
used to ensure that products arrive safely and securely to their intended destination, whether it be
a retail store, warehouse, or consumer's home. Packaging can take many different forms, including
boxes, bags, bottles, cans, and more, and can be made from a variety of materials, such as paper,
cardboard, plastic, metal, or glass.
In advertising, packaging refers to the physical or digital container that holds a product and its
associated branding, messaging, and design elements. Packaging is a critical component of
advertising because it is often the first point of contact that a consumer has with a product.
Packaging plays a critical role in advertising by communicating a brand's identity, differentiating a
product from its competitors, conveying important information, protecting the product, and
providing convenience to the consumer. Effective packaging design can help to drive sales and
build a loyal customer base for a brand.
Packaging
Importance of Packaging
Packaging serves a variety of purposes. Here are some of the primary functions of packaging:
• Protection: One of the primary functions of packaging is to protect products from damage or
contamination during transportation, storage, and handling. Packaging must be designed to
withstand various environmental factors such as temperature changes, humidity, and physical
shocks during transit.
• Preservation: In addition to protecting products from damage or contamination, packaging can
also help to extend the shelf life of products by providing a barrier against moisture, air, and light.
Proper packaging can prevent products from spoiling or losing their freshness, ensuring that they
remain safe and appealing for consumers.
• Information: Packaging provides valuable information to consumers about the product, such as its
ingredients, nutritional value, safety warnings, and usage instructions. This information is essential
for consumers to make informed decisions about whether to purchase and use a product.
• Convenience: Packaging can also provide convenience for consumers by making products easier to
use or store. For example, packaging can include features such as resealable zippers or spouts for
easy pouring.
• Marketing: Packaging can be used to promote and market products by showcasing the product's
branding, design, and messaging. Effective packaging design can capture the attention of
consumers, increase brand recognition, and ultimately drive sales.
Importance of Packaging: in advertising

• Branding: Packaging is a key way to showcase a brand's identity, including its logo, color scheme,
and overall design aesthetic. By ensuring that packaging is consistent with a brand's messaging
and visual identity, marketers can create a strong association between the product and the brand.
• Differentiation: Packaging can be used to distinguish a product from its competitors. By
incorporating unique design elements or features, marketers can make a product stand out on the
shelf or in a digital marketplace.
• Communication: Packaging can convey important information to consumers, such as product
features, benefits, and usage instructions. Through clear and effective communication on
packaging, marketers can help consumers make informed decisions about whether to purchase a
product.
• Forms a part of product marketing strategy: An attractive and/or informative package makes the
product stand out and have a promotional appeal. Packaging also acts as the final touchpoint that
helps in product promotion and sale.
• Convenience: Packaging can also make a product easier to use and consume. For example, a
package with a resealable zip lock can make it easier for consumers to use the product over time,
while a single-serving package can make it more convenient to consume the product on the go.
Types of Packaging

Packaging can be broadly categorized into three types: primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging.
Each type of packaging has a specific function and plays a key role in ensuring that products are
safely transported, stored, and sold.
1. Primary Packaging: Primary packaging is the first layer of packaging that comes into direct
contact with the product. It is designed to protect the product from damage, contamination,
and spoilage, and to keep it fresh and safe for consumption. Examples of primary packaging
include bottles, cans, jars, pouches, and blister packs.
2. Secondary Packaging: Secondary packaging is the second layer of packaging that is used to
group primary packages together, making them easier to transport, handle, and display. It
provides additional protection to the primary packaging and helps to promote the product by
providing a space for branding, labeling, and other promotional materials. Examples of
secondary packaging include cardboard boxes, shrink wrap, and display trays.
3. Tertiary Packaging: Tertiary packaging is the third layer of packaging that is used to transport
and store large quantities of products. It is designed to protect the product from damage during
shipping and to make handling and storage easier. Tertiary packaging is typically made of sturdy
materials like corrugated cardboard, wooden pallets, or plastic containers. Examples of tertiary
packaging include shipping containers, pallets, and crates.
Types of Packaging
Types of Packaging

In addition to these three broad categories, there are also several other types of packaging,
including:

1. Sustainable Packaging: Sustainable packaging is designed to minimize the environmental impact

of packaging by reducing waste, using renewable materials, and promoting recycling. Examples
of sustainable packaging include biodegradable plastics, recycled cardboard, and compostable
materials.
2. Child-Resistant Packaging: Child-resistant packaging is designed to prevent children from
accessing hazardous materials or items, such as medications, cleaning supplies, and tobacco
products. It typically includes safety features like special caps, locks, or seals that are difficult for
children to open.
3. Tamper-Evident Packaging: Tamper-evident packaging is designed to alert consumers if a
product has been opened or tampered with. It typically includes features like seals, labels, or
tape that indicate if the package has been compromised.
Types of Packaging
New age packaging

New age packaging solutions not only aim to provide improved functionality, but also focus on
enhancing the overall user experience and after-sale service for customers. Here are some ways in
which new age packaging solutions achieve this:

Improved User Experience: New age packaging solutions are designed to be user-friendly and
provide a better overall experience for customers. For example, packaging that is easy to open,
convenient to carry, or provides better product visibility can enhance the user experience.
Innovative features like QR codes, augmented reality, or embedded sensors can also provide
additional information about the product or make it more interactive and engaging for customers.

Better After-Sale Service: New age packaging solutions can also improve after-sale service for
customers by providing features that extend beyond the point of purchase. For example, packaging

experience for customers. For example, packaging that features personalized branding or messages
can help to create a stronger connection between the customer and the brand. Packaging that
allows customers to choose their preferred color or design can also help to make the product more
appealing and unique to the individual customer.

Sustainability: New age packaging solutions are often designed with sustainability in mind, which
can help to improve the overall user experience and after-sale service for customers. Packaging that
is made from eco-friendly materials or is designed for easy recycling can help to reduce waste and
provide a more environmentally-friendly option for customers. This can help to create a positive
brand image and enhance customer loyalty.

Overall, new age packaging solutions aim to provide a more holistic approach to packaging, by
focusing on improving the overall user experience and after-sale service for customers. By
incorporating innovative features, customizations, and sustainable materials, these solutions can
help to create a more positive and engaging experience for customers, which can lead to increased
brand loyalty and customer satisfaction.
Experience and Packaging

Earlier we saw packaging is the outer covering, which provides protection, convenience and
information to the consumer for a product. Over the time the packaging has evolved beyond a
protection cover or information providing piece of paper. The emergence of digital services and
products has given packaging a new meaning altogether. The way your website or a landing page
looks, the user experience of your mobile app or how much steps one needs to take before ordering
your product online, the after sales service, delivery status or a simple thank you note is all now a
essential part of packaging as well.
The new businesses (start-ups) are not actually inventing a new product or a service, they are solely
based on revolutionizing existing category by making it customer oriented and easily accessible.
Basically they are changing the overall packaging/experience a consumer goes through while
making a purchase. Amazon, Uber, Zomato, Lens kart are all in the business of providing improved
packaging and experience to their customers.
Experience and Packaging

The marketing strategy of Paper Boat was

based on the concept of nostalgia, which
aimed to connect with customers by
evoking memories of their childhood. The
brand's advertisements and social media
campaigns were focused on highlighting
the regional flavors of India and the
stories behind them. The brand's
packaging was also a key part of its
marketing strategy. The packaging of
each product was designed to be unique,
with illustrations and stories that provided
customers with a glimpse of the product's
origins. For example, the packaging of
Aam Panna featured an illustration of an
old Indian lady sitting under a tree and
sipping the drink, while the Jaljeera
packaging had an illustration of a boat
sailing in a sea of spices.
Experience and Packaging

Zomato - Zomato is an online food delivery

Introduction

Graphic design software is a digital tool used to create visual designs, such as posters, advertisements, logos, or
illustrations. The software provides various tools, features, and functions that allow designers to manipulate
images, text, and other elements to create a final design that communicates a specific message or idea. Graphic
design software can be used for a variety of applications, including advertising, branding, marketing, website
design, and more. With graphic design software, designers can create designs that are both visually appealing and
effective at conveying a message to the intended audience.

Graphic design is a critical part of modern communication and media, and its importance cannot be overstated.
Here are some reasons why graphic design is important:

• Communicates Messages: Graphic design is a powerful tool for communicating messages, ideas, and concepts
to an audience. By using the right visual elements, graphic design can help convey complex information in a
clear and concise way.
• Builds Brands: Graphic design helps to create and maintain brand identities by crafting visual elements that are
unique, recognizable, and memorable. It is often used in advertising, marketing, and branding to create a
strong, cohesive brand image.
• Enhances User Experience: Graphic design plays an essential role in enhancing user experience in websites,
mobile applications, and other digital products. It helps to make interfaces more intuitive, easy to use, and

Designing Software

Some of the most popular graphic design software programs are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and GIMP.
• Adobe Photoshop is a versatile software program used for creating and editing images. It is popular for photo
editing and digital painting. Photoshop's strength lies in its powerful image editing tools, such as layer masks,
color adjustments, and filters. Its weakness is that it is not a vector-based software, so it may not be ideal for
creating scalable designs. It is commonly used by photographers, web designers, and digital artists.
• Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based software program that is primarily used for creating illustrations, logos, and
graphics. Its strength is in its ability to create designs that can be scaled infinitely without losing quality.
Illustrator's tools are geared toward creating geometric shapes, lines, and paths, and the program also includes
tools for typography and color. Its weakness is that it is not ideal for photo editing. It is commonly used by
graphic designers, illustrators, and branding professionals.
• GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an open-source, free image editing software program that is similar
to Adobe Photoshop. Its strength is in its customization options, and its wide range of photo editing and
manipulation tools. It can also be used for creating digital art. Its weakness is that it may not be as intuitive or
user-friendly as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. It is commonly used by beginners or those who do not want to
pay for software.
In terms of choosing one program over another, it largely depends on the type of project a designer is working on.
For example, if the designer is working on creating an illustration or logo, they would want to use Adobe Illustrator. If
they are working on photo editing or digital painting, they would want to use Adobe Photoshop. If they are just
starting out or want a free alternative, they may choose to use GIMP. Ultimately, each program has its own strengths
and weaknesses, and the decision on which to use will depend on the designer's individual needs and preferences.

the project. Some formats are better suited for web graphics, while others are designed for high-quality
print design or medical imaging. It is important to choose the appropriate format to ensure that the image
or graphic quality is not compromised and the file size is optimized for its intended use.

Creating Designs: Practical (Creative)

While creating designs for artworks or banners we often spend more time thinking about where to start or how
the design will come up instead of focusing on getting started. Hence, before making a design follow these steps
which will give a better output and will eliminate time consuming thought process.

1. Read the brief carefully and expect the design (elements/mood/trend/type etc.) accordingly.
2. If sizes are not provided for the creative ask for it do not assume. If the creative is for digital platforms then it
is safe to design it in the square format 1200x1200px which is universal across various media online.
3. Do not consume time in making your own elements, it is a design not a logo!
4. Refer to the various available designs online to get inspiration or to find something which will look appealing
or which best suits your idea, which gives a head-start or a blueprint to start the designing work.
5. Always save your document before and after the creative is exported software crash is a usual thing while
making a complex artwork.
6. If time is limited or you are expected to give urgent design output, don’t risk it by being creative in this
scenario. Few websites come in handy to make the journey less painful like: Canva, Adobe Express, Freepik,
Vectorstock etc. these website provides pre-designed or editable formats which can save lot of time and
energy while creating a design.
Creating Designs: Practical (Mockup)

A design mockup is a visual representation of a product, such as a website or mobile app, that is created to
demonstrate its layout, functionality, and overall appearance. It typically includes images, text, and other design
elements, and is meant to be a realistic representation of what the final product will look like.
The importance of design mockups lies in their ability to communicate a product's design and functionality to
stakeholders, such as clients, developers, and designers. By providing a clear visual representation of the
product, design mockups can help to ensure that everyone involved in the development process is on the same
page and understands what the final product should look like.
Additionally, design mockups can be used to identify potential issues or areas for improvement before the
product is developed. By allowing stakeholders to visualize the product in advance, they can provide feedback
and make necessary changes to the design, resulting in a better end product.
Overall, design mockups are an essential part of the product design process, as they help to ensure that
everyone involved in the development process is aligned and working towards the same goal. They are easy to
understand because they provide a visual representation of the product, making it easier to communicate ideas
and concepts.

Creating Designs: Practical (Print)

Print design refers to the process of creating visual content that is intended to be printed onto physical surfaces
or materials, such as paper, cardboard, fabric, or plastic. Print design is an important aspect of graphic design,
and it involves the use of typography, color, images, and other design elements to create a cohesive and visually
appealing composition.
Print design can take many forms, including:
• Business cards
• Brochures
• Posters
• Flyers
• Packaging
• Magazine layouts
• Stationery
• T-shirts and other apparel designs
Print designers must have a strong understanding of the printing process, including color management, file
formats, and resolution. They must also be skilled in using design software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator,
and InDesign, to create high-quality designs that are optimized for print. Overall, print design is an important
aspect of graphic design that plays a critical role in creating engaging and effective marketing materials, branding
campaigns, and other visual communications.
