COURSE DESCRIPTION
Principles of Management is a rich, interactive learning experience designed to give students an overarching
view of management and the basic intellectual tools and aptitudes they need to meet today's organizational
challenges. This basic management course will investigate the different functions of management, namely
planning, organizing, leading and controlling. In tandem, the course will explore how issues such as

organization structure, technology, innovation, ethics, corporate responsibility, competitive environment and
customer‐focus influence managerial decision making.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
To introduce business and non business students with various topics pertaining to management
such as strategy, global management, leadership, entrepreneurship, human resource management
and organizational structure in an evolving and competitive environment. The course will allow
students to:
1. Develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts, classical and contemporary theories,
and current practices in management;
2. Apply relevant management concepts, tools, and theories to critically analyze and evaluate
business problems/ decisions given the understanding of external and internal environment of
the organization;
3. Discuss and debate a variety of topics in management including the ethical and global
perspectives by applying their knowledge of management in the context of both for profit and
public/not-for-profit organizations.
4. Present and defend their analysis and recommendations effectively, both in oral and written
forms. (General Learning Goal).
Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the basic managerial knowledge necessary to
understand role of manager. Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Briefly outline features of and distinguish between different management theories.
2. Describe the role of managers and the factors influencing manager’s decision making.
3. Explain key functions of management and analyze a business situation and its
challenges.
4. Express their understanding of various management issues including globalization,
technology,

6. Realize the importance of group /team working, and apply reasoning to solve problems.

• You will find your instructor (and TAs) available to answer your queries and clear your understanding
issues about any particular topic. All you have to do is to email or communicate through class
whatsapp group which we will be formally active from first week of the semester.
• All course related material (course outline, reference book, relevant readings and videos, or session
related updates) will be uploaded on LMS, Resources tab (lms.lums.edu.pk).
• Emails will be frequently used for all formal communication related to your course including class
zoom session invitation. Therefore, please ensure that you check your email before every class.
• Please ensure all that your instructor is copied in the emails you sent to the TAs for any matter. In
case of policy matters (CP grading, quiz marks review, exam structure, etc.) the final word will be
from the instructor.
• In case of internet connectivity issue, the message needs to be sent within 5minutes of class
commencement through email (to the instructor with cc to TAs).
