Graphic Design Bibliography
"The elements of design. Style Manual for Graphic Designers" by Timothy Samara of Editorial
GG is a manual that exhaustively analyzes the fundamentals of typography , layout, the use of
color, space, image and ways of integrating the whole. It offers great advice on design
principles, but also shows how to break basic rules without compromising communication or
confusing the public.”
Nor can we forget "How are objects born? Notes for a design methodology" by Bruno
Munari, also from GG, in this book he systematically analyzes the path that the designer takes
from facing a functional problem to the projection and configuration of its material solution.
The titles of the wonderful collection " World of Art " by Thames and Hudson, exist in Spanish,
co-published by Ediciones Destino in the El mundo de Arte collection, although they do not
appear on their website. This comprehensive guide covers all aspects of modern design:
graphic design, product, interiors, furniture, industrial design and architecture .
The author examines not only the work of globally important designers , but also the many
dramatic changes that have influenced design and its uses since 1900. Political and ideological
concepts, such as feminism and green design, are defined and explained, as are technological
advances, new materials and techniques, and the most influential movements in modern
culture. The text contains cross-references and full bibliographical notes, along with a
chronological table of design highlights.
This great history of graphic design begins with the poster and continues with brochures and
magazines, advertising, corporate identity, television and digital media, the effects of technical
innovations, such as photography and the computer.
A new final chapter in this revised edition collects international events and the great graphic
design professionals of recent years, exploring the revolutionary impact of digital technology.
A very complete guide to know the history, its evolution and glimpse the future .
"Dictionary of Graphic Design and Designers", Alan Livingston, Isabella Livingston, Thames &
Hudson
"Dictionary of Art and Artists", Herbert Read, Nikos Stangos, Thames and Hudson
An international book to date, this extensively illustrated cross-reference dictionary offers
information on more than 2,500 artists, paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, schools and
movements, including essential information about art and artists. Talk about the techniques,
materials, terms and writings that have influenced artists. An essential reference book for a
graphic designer.
Theory of color
"The art of color" by Johannes Itten and "The interaction of color" by Josef Albers, both perfect
for understanding the basic principles of color and knowing how they interact with each
other, they are enjoyable and fun books, they introduce elements that go beyond the color
itself. color, the interesting Gestalt theories, such as form and counterform.
shape theory
"The syntax of the image, introduction to the visual alphabet" by Donis A. Dondis by GG is an
entertaining and rigorous approach that explores those principles and rules of the language of
images that directly affect semantics, rhetoric and visual communication . Dondis's
theoretical proposal is accompanied by multiple examples and references ranging from
painting and sculpture to architecture, advertising, cinema or television.
To finish understanding the theory of form, I also recommend the book "Signs, symbols, marks,
signals" by Adrian Frutiger also from GG, a book to better understand the configuration of
basic communicative signs (triangle, cross, arrow,... ). It is not limited to a formal
understanding of the sign, but to cultural and psychological parameters. It also exposes the
sign systems that the main cultures have developed. A basic book to recognize symbols, their
concepts and their uses.
Typography
"Typography Manual" by Jose Luis Martín and Montse Ortuna from Editorial Campgráfic, is not
just another manual, but one of the most entertaining and complete that we can find in
Spanish . Very good examples and historical analysis of the evolution of typography. Also
noteworthy is "The Book of Typography" by Adrian Frutiger, in which the author says verbatim
that 'A typography must be designed in such a way that no one notices it'.
Frutiger refuses to conceive typography as an end in itself , he opts for subordinating design
to its practical purpose of service to people and defends that the maximum achievement that
the type designer can aspire to is that his typography goes unnoticed in his reading. The
debate is open, I put it on the table, do you agree or not? Not me, for me lyrics are art in
themselves.
"Aesthetic theory", Theodor Adorno, Akal Editions
As the title itself indicates, it is an exposition of the author's aesthetic theory, in which all his
ideas about art and the philosophy of art are collected, where it has a place from the analysis
of the origin, truth content and life of works , to their relationship with politics and society,
the philosophy of history, technology or logic, passing through classic studies in the philosophy
of art, such as Kantian, Hegelian or psychoanalytic aesthetics.
A very interesting book about Adorno's vision of aesthetics in the world of art and design, like
what we already talked about in the report on Kitsch and neoKitsch , a book that helps you
reflect and analyze your environment, it is absolutely recommended.
" The Art of Looking Sideways ", Alan Fletcher
It is difficult to recommend the book of a single author, as a reference book, I could name
several, " The Designer's Art" by Paul Rand, " Letter and Image " by Robert Massin, " From
Cave Painting to Comic Strip" by Lancelot Hogben, among others, but I have opted for the
graphic designer Alan Fletcher (1931-2006) was the creator, among others, of the current
Reuters logo and also worked for Lloyd's and Daimler Benz.
In the book " The Art of Looking Sideways ", it is considered one of the best to understand
how “visual intelligence” works , it offers us great and detailed information about typography,
use of color and graphic composition, a marvel.
