Problem Set No.

1 – Alternating-Current Generators
Instruction:
1. Use short bond paper in doing this activity.
2. Write your name, section, date and activity number.
3. State the problem first then the given, the required items, and then the solution.
4. Enclose in a box the answers to every question.

Problem 1) A three phase alternator has 6 slots per pole per phase. Determine the distribution factor.
Problem 2) A two pole three phase 50 Hz Y-connected alternator has 9 slots per pole and 6 conductor
per slots. What is the Φ if the voltage on open circuit is 1.1kV? Assume a coil span of unity.
Problem 3) An armature of a three-phase alternator has 120 slots. The alternator has 8 poles.
Determine its distribution factor.
Problem 4) A 4 pole, three-phase alternator has 36 slots. It is using an armature winding which is short
pitched by 1 slot. Calculate its coil span factor.
Problem 5) The alternator has 18 slots per pole and the first coil lies in slot 1 and 16. Calculate pitch
factor for fundamental, 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics.
Problem 6) A three-phase, 16 pole alternator has a star connected winding with 144 slots and 10
conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.03 Wb, sinusoidally distributed and the speed is 375 rpm.
Find the frequency, phase voltage and line emf. Assume a full pitch coil.
Problem 7) The stator of a three-phase, 16 pole alternator has 144 slots and there are 4 conductors
per slot in two layers and the conductors of each phase are connected in series. If the speed of the
alternator is 375 rpm, calculate the emf induce per phase. The resultant flux in the air gap is 5 x 10-2
Wb per pole sinusoidally distributed. Assume a coil span in electrical degrees as 1500.
Problem 8) A 4 pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz star-connected alternator has 60 slots with 4 conductors per slot.
Coils are short pitched by 3 slots. If the coil spread is 60 0, find the line voltage induced for a flux per
pole of 0.943 Wb distributed sinusoidally in space. All turns per phase are in series.
Problem 9) A 4 pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz star-connected alternator has 15 slots per pole and each slot has
40 conductors. All conductors are in series. The winding factor being 0.95. When running at no load for
a certain flux per pole, the terminal emf is 1825 volts. If the windings are lap connected as in DC
machines, what would be the emf between the brushes for the same speed and flux per pole. Assume
sinusoidal distribution of the winding.
Problem 10) Calculate the rms value of the induced emf per phase of a 40 pole, 3 phase, 50 Hz
alternator with 2 slots per pole per phase and 4 conductors per slot in two layers. The coil span is 150 0.
The flux per pole has a fundamental component of 0.12 Wb and a 20% third component.
