The Lord of Miracles
The Lord of Miracles
In the month of October, it has been a popular tradition for many years that parishioners invade the
church of the Nazarenes to venerate the Lord of Miracles. The story begins in the 17th century. They
say that the image of the Lord of Miracles WAS painted in the neighborhood of Pachacamilla, by a
dark-skinned man named Benito. It happened that, in 1655, a strong earthquake shook destroyed the
city of Lima, reducing everything to rubble, including the port of Callao. But, in the destroyed
Pachacamilla neighborhood, only the old wall where the slave had painted the Lord remained
standing. There the people began to worship the Image. Thirty-two years later, another earthquake
destroyed Lima. The miracle itself repeated: the image was still intact On the wall, the sin without a
scratch, and MANY Faithful did take refuge AROUND IT. That tragic DAY, a copy painted in oils
went out for the first time in a procession along the dusty streets of the Pachacamilla neighborhood.
The show of faith was to thank God for the lives saved and to obtain mercy for the Peruvian people,
after the disaster. At 'then', every year the procession was repeated in the month of October. In the
middle of the year 1690, the route of the procession of the Lord of Miracles had surpassed the limits
of the neighborhood and Lima had already fully entered into its faith. In 1718, Viceroy Manuel Amat
y Juniet ordered the construction of the church for the Nazarene and gave up no land for the Convent
of the Nazarenas. From that date until today, the oil copy of the image of the Lord of Miracles is for
sale in a procession and, around it, MANY characters are concentrated. For several centuries there
have been countless miracles attributed to him, and the Catholic faith of the Peruvian people towards
him is indescribable.
