Importance of The Operating System

The document describes the importance of operating systems and provides information about their history and main types. Operating systems manage the components of electronic devices such as computers, phones and consoles, and allow users to interact with them. The main operating systems mentioned are Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android and Chrome OS. The document also summarizes the evolution of operating systems from the first generations based on valves to the current ones with par architecture.

IMPORTANCE OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM

Most electronic devices that operate using microprocessors have a built-in operating system, such as computers,
mobile phones, consoles, etc.
An operating system is the fundamental software that allows users to interact with machines, managing data,
applications and their components (screen, keyboard...). In the case of computers, some of the operating systems
are Windows, Linux, OS X, iOS, Android and Google Chrome OS.
Operating Systems efficiently manage the operation of the computer, allowing effective execution of programs
without conflict between them, as well as changes that are required within the same system without affecting the
performance of existing functions.
Operating systems are constantly evolving to improve their performance, adapt to new computers and meet the
needs of users. Currently, they are designed with graphic environments so that their handling is simple and intuitive,
integrating multimedia and communications technologies.
HISTORY OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
Since the beginning of humanity, instruments and machines have been built with the aim of simplifying
calculation, as well as to obtain quick and exact results for problems related to commerce, accounting,
industry, etc.
The origin of computers is usually associated with the abacus, built to carry out simple operations several
centuries before Christ, although electronic computers were not invented until the mid-20th century. The
operating systems emerged with the 4 first generation computers and have been linked to their technological
evolution, as can be seen in the analysis carried out below:
● 1944 - 1954. First generation: Vacuum valves.
● 1955 - 1963. Second generation: Transistors.
● 1964 - 1970. Third generation: Integrated circuits.
● 1971 - 1983. Fourth generation: Microprocessors.
● 1984 - 1998. Fifth generation: Microelectronics.
● 1999 - Present. Sixth generation: Parallel architectures.
FAMILIES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
macOS
Also known as Macintosh Operating System, it is a commercial operating system developed by Apple for
Macintosh computers. Its architecture is based on the UNIX operating system, so it is very stable. He was
the first to popularize the graphical user interface.
Windows
Microsoft Windows (generally known as Windows or MS Windows), is the name of a family of software
distributions for PCs, smartphones, servers, and embedded systems, developed and sold by Microsoft and
available for multiple architectures, such as x86 and ARM . The first version of Microsoft Windows, version
1.0, introduced in November 1985, competed with Apple's operating system.
Cloud operating systems
A mobile operating system is a computer-like operating system that controls the mobile phone. Mobile
operating systems are much simpler and are more oriented towards wireless connectivity, multimedia
formats for mobile phones and the different ways of entering information into them.
These are the most important mobile operating systems:
Android
The Android operating system is undoubtedly the mobile market leader in OS, it is based on Linux
originally designed for mobile devices such as smartphones but was later modified to be used on different
devices such as tablets. It is currently under development for use on netbooks and PCs, the developer of this
OS It is Google, it was announced in 2007 and released in 2008.
iOS
iOS of iPhones, formerly called iPhone OS, created by Apple originally for the iPhone, later used on the
iPod Touch and iPad. It is a derivative of Mac OS X, it was released in 2007. In itself, its main revolution is
an almost perfect combination between hardware and software, the management of the multi-touch screen
that could not be surpassed by the competition.
Windows Phone
Windows Phone, formerly called Windows Mobile, is an OS Compact mobile developed by Microsoft, it is
based on the core of the Windows CE operating system and has a set of basic applications. It is designed to
be aesthetically similar to the desktop versions of Windows, and there is a wide range of third-party software
available for Windows Mobile, which can be purchased through the Windows Marketplace for Mobile
online store.
