QTREader Getting - Started 2021
QTREader Getting - Started 2021
Quick Terrain Reader is the free companion software to Applied Imagery’s Quick Terrain Modeler software. It
can load, visualize, and navigate through 3D point clouds and surface models (DEM/DSM/DTM), but even
more useful are Workspaces generated from Quick Terrain Modeler. Workspaces can contain 3D models,
overlaid color imagery, vectors, markers, routes, movies, and various annotations. When QT Reader is used
hand in hand with QT Modeler, it is transformed from a simple 3D viewer to a powerful collaboration tool.
This document will get you started with QT Reader. Please consult the help file for more information.
Specific Steps:
1. Basic Hardware Requirements
2. Download/Install/Run QT Reader
3. Screen Layout
4. Loading Data – Point Clouds, Surface Models, and Workspaces
5. Helpful Visualization Settings
6. Movement Controls
7. Measurement
8. Working with QT Modeler – Maximizing your QT Reader Experience
2. Download/Install/Run QT Reader
Download QT Reader from Applied Imagery’s website ‐ http://appliedimagery.com/download. Installation
should take less than 1 minute. Run QT Reader after installation. It does not require a license file or license
code.
Note: Upon startup of QT Reader, you may receive pop‐up warnings about insufficient graphics capabilities. If
the warnings indicate an absence of OpenGL, or the use of integrated graphics processors, some graphics and
visualization capabilities may be disabled. Please refer to hardware requirements above as well as the QT
Reader Help Menu > OpenGL Resources. Click the “Help” button in the Help Menu > OpenGL Resources
window for additional detail.
The real time coordinate readout in the status bar displays the coordinate and elevation of the position under
the cursor. The default readout is in the native coordinates of the data, typically UTM. Defense Users: To
change this readout to MGRS, right click on the Status Bar and choose MGRS:
QT Modeler Formats:
QTC Point clouds
QTT surface models
QWZ Workspaces (Note: Using a Workspace is the only way to load color imagery, vectors, movies,
etc. into the QT Reader)
Other Formats:
LAS & LAZ (Point Cloud)
GeoTIFF DEM (Surface Model)
DTED (Surface Model)
Load 3D data files by dragging and dropping, or by using the Open/Add Model buttons:
Workspaces: In order to incorporate much richer content into the QT Reader scene, use QT Modeler to create
a workspace. The amount and type of data that can be in a workspace is virtually unlimited, and all of it can
be loaded into QT Reader and visualized. Load a workspace by clicking the “Load Workspace” button at the
top of the layer tree:
The default height color palette is Blue to Red. Most users working with DEM’s (rather than point clouds)
prefer the height color palette to be Earth Tones. To set the height color Palette, Right Click on the Height
Color Button and choose Earth Tones from the pulldown menu.
When working with point clouds, it may be useful to change the size of the points:
7. Basic Measurements
QT Reader can measure basic distances in the 3D scene. Use the measurement line button to begin a line,
right click to end line.
QT Reader cannot overlay color imagery by itself. A QT Modeler user, however, can create realistic 3D
scenes by loading DEM’s, point clouds, color imagery, routes, markers, vectors, etc. then exporting a
portable workspace that can be loaded into QT Reader. The visualization of the scene in QT Reader will
be identical to what is seen in QT Modeler.
QT Modeler users can create analysis layers such as Line of Sight, Slope Maps, and Helicopter Landing
Zones that are preserved as “Snapshot” layers. When a QTT or workspace is saved after performing
these analyses, the QT Reader user will be able to see and toggle through these layers.
QT Modeler‐created workspaces are the only way a QT Reader user will be able to visualize and work
with the following types of data:
o 2D draped imagery.
o Vectors
o Analysis “Snapshot” layers.
o Movies
o Routes
o Annotations
