70 Robin learnt that his cousin weuld nst be coming. He was greatly disappointed,
It was witl't
Quacky was a half-grown duckling when it first wandered inio the Kims' countryside
house two years ago. As Mr and Mrs Kim's two teenaged daughters were frightened of the
duck, Mr Kim tried chasinE it away several tin'les. However, the duck was very persistent.
It would always return, quacking softly outside if the door was closed or strolling cententedly
all over the hause if semeone had forgotten to shut the door.
After a few msntl"ls of having their home invaded by the duck, Mre Kim told her
children tlrat she would eall a nearby anima[ shelter te iake the duck away. l-{owever,
despite her resolve to get their unwelcome visitor removed, she kept putting it off till a later
dste as she was very busy during that period.
Orre morning, Mrs Kim war alone at h*me when she tripped over the edge of the 10
Iiving roorn rug. There wa$ a sharp pain in her right ankle, and soon it had swollen to a[most
double its orlginal size. That was when Mrs Kim knew she had to eeek medical help quickly"
But how? Sh+ had accidentally left her handphone in the family car the night before, and
by the time she remembered it earlier that morning, her husband had already driven off to
work, There was no other telephone in the house as everyone in the hsusehold relied on 15
their own personal handphone. There was no way that Mrs Kim could call anyone for help.
Fearing that she had broken her ankle, Mrs Kim was beginning to panic when she
heard a famitiar "quack, quack" ecming from outside the house. Listening carefully, she
could hear the quacking becoming lauder as the duck came closer. "Quack, quack,"
repeated the duck at frequent intervals as it approached the house. The repetitive sound 20
struck Mrs Kirn as comieal in her dreadful situation and that strangely calmed her dswn.
It so happened that the front door had not been shut properiy that day, and soCIn a
heak could he seen sticking out from behind the door. "Quatrk," went the duck happily as it
entered the living room.
"Oh, hello, litt[e duck," Mrs Ki*r said weakly. But ihe moment the duclt saw Mrs Kim nt

lying on the fioor, it quacked rapidly and hopped around flapping its wings before flying out
of the door. Mrs Kim's heart sank at the duck's abandonment of her. Now she did not even
have an animalto talk to as a distraction from the pain in her ankle.
To Mrs Kim's immense surprise and relief, the duck returned several minutes later,
follawed by l'*er neighbour, Mr Amir, who had an annoyed expression on his face. Mrs Kim 30
later found out that the duck had gone to Mr Arnir's house and quacked loudly and
incessantly r*ntil Mr Amir came out of his house. The duck had somehow led hirn back to
Mrs Kirn. Mr Amir had intended to complainr to Mrs Kim about the noisy duck, but when he
saw what had happened to her, he quickly called for an ambulance-
At the hospital, Mrs Kim had an X-ray whicl"l revealed that she only had an ankle 35
sprain, Thanks to the prompt treatm*nt she received, she recovered well in a couple of
weeks. From then on, no one in the family ever spoke absut getting r*d sf the duek again
and the children even let it follonr them about the house.
Mrs Kim found an sld basket and filled it wlth straw for the dr.rck to sleep in. $he also
gave it a narrie that was highly meaningful ta her: Quackyl 40
