Grammar Translation Approach and Direct Approach
Grammar Translation Approach and Direct Approach
1. Grammar translation approach and direct approach have a different way in teaching their student.
We can see the differences in three aspects: purpose, content, and technique.
The grammar translation approach is used to help student to have well attitude, more classy, and
knowing culture values oh the Roman and Greek civilization, since the target are young men from
rich, powerful, and noble families. While the direct approach is used by making students being a
part of one culture, so they can learn everything about that culture include language, because the
target of this approach are people that want to explore the world.
The grammar translation used original old Greek and Latin books. Student should translate those
books to their own language and retranslate their former work to original language again with
correct grammar. This method is believed can teach student both language and culture content
in the books. In the other hand, the direct approach is taught like children while learn language.
The learner learned by talking to the native speaker and reading history of one tribe. They learn
about grammar indirectly while using that language.
Both grammar translation and direct approach have different purpose, content, and technique.
Both of these approaches can be used in the class to provide student a variety of method in
learning language.
2. I use both of this approach in my class. Since there are focus and diffuse mode in the class, both
of these approaches are relevant to my class. When we learn a new grammar, in the focus mode,
we learn how to use it in a sentence and what the meaning of it. We use the “fill and blanks”
technique too in order to show student what the different that grammar than any other grammar.
In the diffuse mode we learn how to use the grammar in the role playing, or student is asked to
tells a story or describes thing. For the feed back students can correct themselves or correct their
friends as a feedback.
