SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
The School offers a BVM (Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine) curriculum following the World
Organization of Animal Health (OIE) guidelines which fully comply with the Namibian
Veterinary and Veterinary Para-professions Act, Act 1 of 2013, and has been fully accredited
by the Namibian Veterinary Council for unconditional registration of veterinary graduates. In
addition, the School offers post graduate studies (MSc and PhD) in various fields, including
veterinary pathology, veterinary parasitology, One Health, veterinary infectious diseases and
also in certain clinical fields.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Veterinary Medicine involves a wide range of animal species, from production animals
(including cattle, small stock, pigs, poultry, fish and bees) through wildlife (including iconic and
valuable species such as the critically endangered rhino, sable and other antelope, and the
beloved big five tourist species); and companion animals (including donkeys, horses, and pets
and service dogs).
Admission Requirements
The minimum admission requirements into the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme
are as follows:

The extended Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme consists of the first year of Bachelor
of Science modules consisting of Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physical Science.
In addition to the above, final admission for all candidates will depend on a successful
interview and pre-selection test.
• Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not necessarily ensure admission.
Admission is based on the number of places available and is awarded on the basis of
merit and other criteria, e.g. regional representation, marginalized students, students
qualifying for admission to the extended Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme,
and admission of international students, as determined by the School on a quota
system.
• Only candidates who have applied for Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine as first choice
will be considered for selection into the programme.

SCHOOL OF NURSING AND PUBLIC HEALTH
School of Nursing and Public Health aims at training competent professional nurses to
complement the delivery of health services, private and public, across the country.
Professional nurses are able to render comprehensive services in all areas of health. The
School also offers post graduate Public health programmes to grant an opportunity to health
professionals to specialize in public health or field epidemiology.

This programme aims to train compassionate, competent, caring and culturally sensitive
nurses to deliver preventive, curative and rehabilitative nursing care across the Country.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
The UNAM School of Medicine opened its doors in 2010 as part of a national strategy to
strengthen health care in Namibia and to date has produced more than 400 medical doctors.
The School of Medicine is well placed within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Veterinary
Medicine to become a centre of excellence in research, education, and clinical training that
is locally relevant and globally competitive. The School of Medicine is housed at the Hage
Geingob campus. It is a state- of -the- art campus on so many levels and thus very appealing
to many a student.
The newly transformed Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree is a full-time
programme offered over six years. The curriculum ensures early clinical exposure with both
vertical and horizontal integration of the pre- and para-clinical modules and clinical subjects.
The purpose of this qualification is to produce health professionals whose knowledge,
professional skills, and professional attitudes and behaviour in medicine are in tune with the
needs of society. The degree has been tailored to instil specific competencies required for
clinical reasoning and judgement, clinical problem solving, ethical and moral decision making,
and leadership to name but a few. Upon qualification and registration, Bachelor of Medicine
and Bachelor of Surgery graduates from the School of Medicine can either enter the public or
private health sectors. The employment possibilities are therefore vast and the scope of
practice ranges from resident medical officers to specialist physicians.
Admission requirements
To be considered for admission to the School of Medicine, a candidate must have obtained
the following grades at Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary Level / Namibian
Senior Secondary Certificate Higher Level (not older than 2 years) /Namibian Senior Secondary
Certificate Advanced Subsidiary Level or equivalents from a recognized qualification:
• English with a minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCO Level (or 37 points with a minimum
C symbol in English), or a minimum c or higher on NSSCAS Level

Medicine AGB and if they have obtained the minimum UNAM points as outlined above
or as determined by the School AGB.
• Transfer of students from other Medicine degree programmes from other institutions or
universities, may be considered by the School AAGC based on availability of space
and if they have obtained the minimum UNAM points as outlined above or as
determined by the School AGB.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
MASTERS (MSC)
Admission requirements:
Candidates without a Bachelor’s degree or a Postgraduate Diploma from UNAM, but who
hold qualifications from an approved institution of higher learning, deemed to be equivalent
to a good Level 8 Bachelor’s degree or a good Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma from UNAM
may also be considered for admission
Prospective candidates must also satisfy specific requirements of the Faculties where they
intend to enrol (e.g. teaching experience for M.Ed. admission.)
Admission requirements:
Candidates with only the Bachelor’s degree may initially be enrolled for a Master’s degree by
research only. If, during the first year of research they demonstrate exceptional abilities, they
may be considered for upgrading into the Doctoral Programme

SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
The mission of the School of Dentistry is to be a Regional centre of excellence in preparing
graduates for a life-long professional career in the provision of dental care that is in tune with
the needs of society. The School shall provide a quality learning environment conducive to the
pursuit of professional competence, while providing services to the community and
undertaking relevant translational research for the enhancement of health. The School will
continually strive for the establishment of training programs in the field of dentistry, lending
support to the human resource development initiatives of the country; this will include the
provision of Continuing Professional Development and postgraduate education of dentists,
and the training and education of specialists and scientists. Finally, the School will seek high
tech dental solutions for the treatment of children and patients with dental phobia and
handicapped persons by using dental Laser devices systems for diagnostics and painless and
bloodless surgery, which will be unique not only in Namibia but also in the surrounding
countries.
• To institute dental care measures to counter major health risks including the prevailing
communicable diseases;
• To develop academically and professionally qualified dentists in sufficient numbers to
support the health care infrastructure of Namibia;
• To conduct research directed to the health care needs of the Namibian society at
large, and which is instrumental in ensuring quality health care service delivery;
• Manage patients using the sound scientific basis of dentistry, including relevant
biomedical sciences,
• Apply leadership and teamwork skills with colleagues and other oral health personnel
in the delivery of oral health care.

• Make decisions based on sound ethical, moral and scientific principles.
Career opportunities:
• The graduate may be employed in the public sector usually at the state-run hospital
• Once registered with HPCNA, the dental practitioner has also the option of being self-
employed in his/her own dental clinic.
Admission requirements
To be considered for admission to the School of Dentistry, a candidate must have obtained

Certificates and similar qualifications CANNOT be considered for entry.
• The above three subjects (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) MUST be completed at first-
year of a university Bachelor's degree or higher. Applicants will only be considered if
they have obtained the minimum UNAM points as outlined above;
• Transfer of students from other programmes in other Schools in the Faculty of Health
Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, including Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing and public
health, Allied health and veterinary medicine, will be subjected to the approval by

Candidates aspiring for admission to the 25BCHD through the Mature Entry Scheme must satisfy
the following conditions:
• they must be at least 25 years old on the first day of the academic year in which
admission is sought
• they must have successfully completed senior secondary education with a minimum
total of 25 points on the UNAM Scale, obtained in five (5) subjects, including
Mathematics, Physical Science/Chemistry, Biology and a minimum C in English at NSSO
level

SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES
The School of Allied Sciences is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine,
and was established in June 2021. It accommodates all those health professions outside
medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. It consists out of four departments where specific
professions are grouped in different departments: Department of Occupational and
Physiotherapy; Department of Physical and Sports Sciences; Department of Psychology and
Social Work and Department of Radiography. These professionals are registered with the
different Health Professions Councils of Namibia (Allied Health Professions Council and Social
Work & Psychology Council).
• Psychology (3year Bachelor degree) can lead to Honours and Masters in Clinical and
Industrial Psychology – Continue with a Doctoral in Psychology (Clinical and Industrial)
A general basic psychological foundation, equip students with the knowledge to
enable them to assess the psychological needs of individuals, groups, communities and
organisations, and to provide appropriate psychological interventions or to refer these
client systems to other professionals. The programme aims at developing students with
the knowledge and skills that will help them to be critical, pro-active, and adaptive
regarding the psychological needs of individuals and groups in different contexts in
society.
• Clinical Psychologist (Clinical- Master’s degree) Work in private and public sector as a
clinical psychologist and provides continuing and comprehensive mental and
behavioural health care for individuals and families.
• Industrial Psychologist (Industrial – Master’s degree) Work in private and public sector
as an industrial psychologist, and applies psychological principles and theories to the
workplace and support individual training, management styles of managers and
company culture.
• Social Worker (four-year professional degree) can do a Masters and Doctoral. Work in
private and public sector. Social Work students must possess a number of essential skills,
values and standards of professional conduct in order to work with diverse populations
and a range of issues within the profession. These essentials include physical, cognitive,
emotional, and character requirements necessary to participate fully in all aspects of
social work education and the practice of social work.

BACHELOR OF RADIOGRAPHY DIAGNOSTIC HONOURS – FULL-TIME, HAGE
GEINGOB CAMPUS (29BSRD)
Admission requirements
In order to be admitted to the programme, candidates must have 33 points in 5 subjects on the
UNAM scale including Mathematics, Physics, Biology and English. The five subjects may be
combined as follows:
• 3 subjects on NSSCAS level including Physics and Biology with a grade c or higher and 2
subjects on NSSCO level with a grade b or higher. English and Mathematics must be passed
on NSSCO level with a B or higher.
OR
• 2 subjects on NSSCAS level including Physics and Biology (with 2 subjects passed with a
grade b and 1 with a grade c or higher) and 2 subjects on NSSCO level with a grade C or
higher. English and Mathematics must be passed on NSSCO level with a C or higher.
• A candidate must hold a valid Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) at an ordinary
level and NSSC at a higher level or equivalent. 5 subjects should be passed including biology
and physics. English and Mathematics are compulsory subjects and should normally be
obtained at IGCSE/NSSCO grade “C “or better. Four subjects must be passed at grade “A” or
better.
• A candidate must hold a valid Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSCO) at an ordinary
level and at a higher level (NSSCH) or equivalent. Five subjects should be passed including
Biology and Physics. English and Mathematics are compulsory subjects and should normally
be obtained at IGCSE/NSSCO grade “C “or better. Four subjects must

Mature Age Entry
Admission can also be considered for persons who qualify through the Mature Age Entry Scheme upon
successful completion of the relevant examinations as set out in the General A special application form is
available for this purpose, online. The selection of candidates will be done based on the highest points on the
UNAM evaluation scale guided by matters of equity as outlined by the national policies.

Applications received through the RPL process will be assessed and considered by the department.
A quota system will also be applied for the selection of candidates to the programme for equal chance of
admission by candidates from all 14 regions of Namibia and prospect international students. In addition to the
above criteria, a pre-selection screening is undertaken by the Section Social Work to determine the suitability
of the prospective student for the Social Work Programme

SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
The School of Pharmacy aims to prepare pharmacy graduates for a life-long professional
career in the provision of pharmaceutical care in response to the needs of the society. We
take pride in developing our students into the '7 Star pharmacist' - Care-giver, Communicator,

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree imparts the skills to prospective pharmacists to: develop and
manufacture medicines, provide patient centred pharmacy care, offer medicines information, manage
medicine supply systems, control and regulate quality of medicines, and promote rational use of medicines.

In order to be admitted to the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours programme, applicants must satisfy at least one
of the following requirements:

(AS) level or any other equivalent qualification with at least:
• 34 points in 5 subjects and the 5 subjects must include; Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics

To apply for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours degree, a candidate must have successfully completed the
extended programme of the School of Pharmacy.
OR
To apply for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours degree, a candidate must have successfully completed a
Science or Health Science degree from a recognized University with passes in Sciences including biochemistry,
mathematics, and Chemistry.
OR
To apply for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours degree, a candidate must be in possession of a Diploma in
Pharmacy (NQF level 6) qualification with at least a lower second grade, and have average score of 60% or
more in pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology and pharmacy practice, and should be registered with the
HPCNA having practiced for at least two (2) years as a Pharmacist’s Assistant or Pharmaceutical Technologist.
Meeting the above student admission criteria DOES NOT necessarily ensure admission. Admission is awarded
on merit and inclusivity based on places available on the programme and any other conditions that may be
determined from time to time. The Faculty/School reserves the right to administer special written entry tests
and interviews before admission.
The selection of applicants is done by the School of Pharmacy Admission Assessment Graduation committee
(AAGC) that is inclusive of academics and other members from the public / registrar’s office.
The selection for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours programme will constitute the following criteria:
• First choice applicants: applicants who have applied for admission into the Bachelor Pharmacy
Honours as a first choice will be prioritized during the selection for admission into the School of
Pharmacy
• Admissions will be based on a regional quota system based on the census of high school leavers,
international students, holders of Diploma in Pharmacy, extended programme, Science or Health
Science degree holders, and marginalized populations. In this case the region of birth will be used to
allocate an applicant to a specific region
• Highest points: all admissions into the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours will be done on MERIT, that is
among applicants that meet the minimum admission requirements, those with the highest points will
be admitted, subject to the regional quota allocations and UNAM policies.
• Admissions to the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours is subject to the annual maximum intake
determined by the University of Namibia and the Health Professions Councils of Namibia, as well as
the number of students repeating year one of the programme.

• Transfer of students from other programmes in other Schools in the UNAM Faculty of Health Sciences
and Veterinary Medicine, including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and public health, Allied health and
veterinary medicine, will be subjected to the approval by both Associate Deans of the concerned
schools, as well as approval by the School AAGC and if they have obtained the minimum UNAM points
as outlined above or as determined by the School AAGC.
• Transfer of students from other degree Pharmacy programmes from other institutions or universities,
may be considered by the School AGB based on availability of space and meeting the requirements
determined by the AAGC and if they have obtained and if they have obtained the minimum UNAM
points as outlined above or as determined by the School AGB.

• 27 points in five subjects and the 5 subjects must include Biology, Mathematics,
Physics and Chemistry
OR
To apply for the Diploma in Pharmacy (Level 6), a candidate must have successfully attained
the Certificate in Pharmacy qualification with an aggregate of at least 60% in the cumulative
grade in the course.

Candidates aspiring for admission to UNAM’s Diploma of Pharmacy degree through the
Mature Age Entry Scheme must satisfy the following conditions:
• They should be at least 25 years old on the first day of the academic year in which
admission is sought
• They should have proof of at least five years pharmacy relevant work experience (as
determined by the School of Pharmacy).
• They should pass all papers of the prescribed Mature Age Entry Tests with an overall
average of 50%.
• Candidates, who, in the opinion of the Faculty, merit further consideration, may be
called for an oral interview before the final selection is made.
The selection for the Diploma in Pharmacy (Level 6) programme will constitute the following
criteria:
• First choice applicants: only applicants who have applied for admission into the
Diploma in Pharmacy (Level 6) as a first choice will be prioritized during the selection
for admission into the School of Pharmacy
• Admissions will be based on a regional quota system based on the census of high
school leavers, international students, holders of Certificate in Pharmacy, holders of a
Sciences or Health Science degree, mature entry, RPL and previously marginalized
populations. In this case the region of birth will be used to allocated an applicant to a
specific region
• Highest points: all admissions into the Diploma in Pharmacy (Level 6) will be done on
MERIT, that is among applicants that meet the minimum admission requirements,
those with the highest points will be admitted, subject to the regional quota
allocations and UNAM policies
• Admissions into the Diploma in Pharmacy (Level 6) is subject to the annual maximum
intake determined by the University of Namibia and the Health Professional Councils
of Namibia, as well as the number of students repeating year 1 of the programme.
• Holders of a Certificate in Pharmacy who may not meet the entry requirement
through this route, may be considered under the category of RPL, and should present
a portfolio of work experiences in the pharmaceutical sector.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
MASTERS (MSc)
Admission requirements:
Candidates without a Bachelor’s degree or a Postgraduate Diploma from UNAM, but who
hold qualifications from an approved institution of higher learning, deemed to be equivalent
to a good Level 8 Bachelor’s degree or a good Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma from UNAM
may also be considered for admission
Prospective candidates must also satisfy specific requirements of the Faculties where they
intend to enrol (e.g. teaching experience for M.Ed. admission.)
Admission requirements:
Candidates with only the Bachelor’s degree may initially be enrolled for a Master’s degree
by research only. If, during the first year of research they demonstrate exceptional abilities,
they may be considered for upgrading into the Doctoral Programme.
