Examination of Mathematical Analysis II

University of Warsaw
Department of Economics

year 2019/20, summer semester

26 June 2020

Attention: You are expected to answer the paper on your own. One of you photographs
should contain your personal declaration that you were unassisted. While correct answers
are important, the exam is mainly concerned with how well you justify your answers using
theorems and calculations to build logical arguments. So correct answers obtained from a
software package without calculations and proof will not be enough to pass.
The answers should be submitted within 2.5 hours to me: Ben Warhurst, in at most
5 photographs contained in a single zip file named: your name-AnII.zip, e.g., Napoleon-
Bonaparte-AnII.zip.

Your answers should include the following information:

• Name and surname

• Index number

• Your signed declaration that you were unassisted.

1.

(a) Let f : R2 → R be the function given by

( 2 2
e−x −y x = 0 or y = 0
f (x, y) =
0 otherwise.

Calculate the gradient ∇f (0, 0), and determine with reasons, if f , is or is not, differen-
tiable at (0, 0).
5pt.

R∞ 2 √
(b) Given that −∞
e−x dx = π, calculate the improper integral:

Z∞

x2 e−x dx
−∞

5pt.

2. Let f : R2 → R be given by the formula f (x, y) = x2 − y 3 . Find and classify the critical
points of the function f . 10pt.

3. Let a, b ∈ R be fixed numbers such that a + b 6= 0, and let g : R3 → R be given by the

formula
g(x, y, z) = az + bxyez + x2 − b − 1.

(a) Show that there is a neighborhood of the point (x, y) = (1, 1), on which one can define
a C 1 function z = z(x, y), such that z(1, 1) = 0 and g(x, y, z(x, y)) = 0. 3pt

(b) Calculate ∂x
(1, 1) and ∂y

(d) What is the approximate value of z(1/2, 1/2) according to the first order Taylor expan-
sion at (1, 1) ? 1pt

4. Let α be any real number larger than 2. Among the points which belong to the intersection
of the ellipsoid
x2 + (4α2 − 8)y 2 + 4α2 z 2 = 4α2
and the plane

find those with maximal and minimal y coordinate. 10pt.

5. Let I be the double integral: ZZ

y dxdy,
A

where
A = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x3 ≤ y ≤ x2 , x ≥ 0}.

1. Express I as an iterated integral in (x, y) coordinates an calculate it’s value. 5pt

2. Use the change of variables (x, y) = Φ(u, v) = (u, uv ) to express I as an iterated integral
in (u, v) coordinates. 5pt
