herbicides, plant growth regulators, rodenticides, mineral oils, disinfectants and others.

pesticide is used.

Substances used to kill or repel insects. It includes acaricides, molloscicides and nematicides, used to kill
mites, snails and slugs, and nematodes, respectively.
Petroleum-derived oils that are used to manage pests and diseases of plants. Petroleum oils may be
referred to by many names, including horticultural oil, spray oil, dormant oil, summer oil, supreme oil,
superior oil, Volck oil or white mineral oil.
Herbicides are substances used to destroy or inhibit the growth of plants, such as weeds. It includes
defoliants, used to remove plant foliage, and desiccants, used to remove water from living plant tissue.
Fungicides are substances that destroy or inhibit the growth of fungi and Bactericides are substances that
kill bacteria.
Fungicidal elements of seed treatments - Seed treatment refers to the application of fungicide, insecticide,
or a combination of both, to seeds so as to disinfect and disinfest them from seed-borne or soil-borne
pathogenic organisms and storage insects.
Insecticidal elements of seed treatments - Seed treatment refers to the application of fungicide,
insecticide, or a combination of both, to seeds so as to disinfect and disinfest them from seed-borne or
soil-borne pathogenic organisms and storage insects.
Natural or synthetic substance used for controlling or modifying plant growth processes without reducing
nutritive value or causing severe phytotoxicity.
Rodenticides are substances that kill, repel or control rodents
Pesticides not included in any of the classes listed above.

re and biochemical mode of action. The FAOSTAT Pesticides Use classification cover the following chemical groups:

The organochlorines are insecticides that contain carbon (thus organo-), hydrogen, and chlorine. They are
also known by other names: chlorinated hydrocarbons, chlorinated organics, chlorinated insecticides, and
chlorinated synthetics.
Generic term for pesticides containing phosphorus but commonly used to refer to insecticides consisting
of acetylcholinesterase inhibiting esters of phosphate or thiophosphate.
The carbamate insecticides are derivatives of carbamic acid. Carbamate compounds act similarly to
organophosphorus compounds, by inhibiting cholinesterase, affecting the passage of nerve impulses
between cells.
Pyrethroid compounds act on nerves, prolonging stimulation. They pass easily through the cuticle of
insects. They are highly bioactive and often used at high dilution.
Botanical pesticide - Chemical with pesticidal activity that is produced naturally within a plant.
Biopesticide - Biological agents with pesticidal activity (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis).
Includes all other types of Insecticides not covered above

The phenoxy herbicides have complex mechanisms of action resembling those of auxins (growth
hormones). They affect cellular division, activate phosphate metabolism, and modify nucleic acid
metabolism.
The triazines, which are six-member rings containing three nitrogens (the prefix tri- means “three”) and
azine (a nitrogen-containing ring) make up the heterocyclic nitrogens. Triazines are strong inhibitors of
photosynthetic electron transport.
The amide herbicides have diverse biological properties. Amides are sometimes grouped with the
chloroacetamides.
The carbamates are esters of carbamic acid, and some representatives are active as herbicides, and
some as fungicides or insecticides.
Dinitroanilines are a class of chemical compounds derived from both aniline and dinitrobenzenes. There
are six isomers: 2,3-dinitroaniline, 2,4-dinitroaniline, 2,5-dinitroaniline, 2,6-dinitroaniline, 3,4-dinitroaniline,
and 3,5-dinitroaniline.
Derivatives of urea, i.e. compounds containing any of the groups, the nitrogen atoms not being part of
nitro or nitroso groups having nitrogen atoms of urea groups singly-bound to oxygen atoms
The sulfonylureas are meristematic inhibitors with both foliar and soil activity which control broadleaf
weeds better than grasses. They function by interfering with biosynthesis of the amino acids valine,
isoleucine, and leucine.
Family of chemical compounds consisting of two pyridyl rings. Pyridine is an aromatic nitrogen-containing
heterocycle that forms complexes with most transition metals. The action of these herbicides occurs
through positive ions, naturally dissociated, which are reduced by photosynthesis to form stable free
radicals. These free radicals are then oxidized to reform the original ion and hydrogen peroxide which
destroys plant tissue.
The uracils inhibit photosynthesis by blocking the Hill reaction, as do the ureas and triazines. They are
usually applied to the soil and move in the transpiration stream.
Includes all other types of Herbicides not covered above
Fungicide made from inorganic substances such as sulphur.
Functional group in organic chemistry. It is the analog of a carbamate in which both oxygen atoms are
replaced by sulfur atoms (when only 1 oxygen is replaced the result is thiocarbamate).
Nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, with parent structures of thiabendazole and/or benzimidazole.
Nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, with molecular formula C3H4N2 (diazoles) C2H3N3 (triazoles)
inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol which is a major component of the plasma membrane of certain
fungi and needed for fungal growth.
A group of organic compounds with molecular formula C4H4N2, with three isomers: pyridazine,
pyrimidine, pyrazine. Morpholines belong to a broad group of fungicides often referred to as sterol
biosynthesis inhibitors (SBI).
Includes all other types of Fungicides and Bactericides not covered above
Dithiocarbamates Fungicides used to treat seeds.
Benzimidazoles Fungicides used to treat seeds.
Triazoles, diazoles Fungicides used to treat seeds.
Botanical products and biologicals used to treat seeds.
Includes all other types of Seed Treatment Fungicides not covered above

Organo-phosphates insecticides used to treat seeds.

Carbamates insecticides used to treat seeds.
Pyrethroids insecticides used to treat seeds.
Includes all other types of Seed Treatment Insecticides not covered above

Anticoagulants are defined as chronic rodenticides, acting by effective blocking of the vitamin K cycle,
resulting in inability to produce essential blood-clotting factors — mainly coagulation factors II
(prothrombin) and VII (proconvertin).
Any salt of hydrocyanic acid. Cyanides contain the ion CN– and are extremely poisonous
Affect the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and cause severe metabolic disturbance.
Substances that cause drowsiness and lethargy, generally acting by slowing down the metabolism of the
rodent. Death usually results from hypothermia.
Includes all other types of Rodenticides not covered above
