HW16 (B2)

CHAPTER 4: EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES

9.4.2 Simultaneous equations

Solve using substitution method. Solve using elimination method.

𝑦 = 3𝑥 𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 28
𝑦 = 𝑥 + 12 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 18

𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1 𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 41
𝑦−𝑥 =5 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 23

𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 19
𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 9 3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 21
Use one algebraic method (substitution or elimination) to solve each pair of simultaneous equations.

𝑥 = 𝑦 − 10 𝑥 − 𝑦 = −1
𝑦 = 2𝑥 2𝑦 + 3𝑥 = 12

𝑦 + 𝑥 = 27 5𝑥 + 8𝑦 = 9
𝑦 = 4(𝑥 + 3) 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 4

3𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 8 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 8
2𝑥 − 𝑦 = −13 4𝑥 + 𝑦 = 9
Solve using graphical method.
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 𝑦=𝑥+4 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 8 4𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 12

Den buys 2 cakes and 3 coffees and it costs him RM9. Ang buys 2 cakes and 1 coffee and it costs her
RM5.
Let 𝑥 represent the cost of a cake and 𝑦 represent the cost of a coffee.
a) Write two equations to represent the information. Don’t solve it.

b) Solve your equations to find the cost of a cake and the cost of a coffee.

each subject.

Xavier buys two items. He receives RM2.26 change from RM40.

The difference between the prices of the two items is RM9.24.
a) Write two equations to represent the information.

b) Solve your equations to find the cost of each item.
