Adjusting Water Phase Salinity

Increasing WPS
(adding salt)

 It is important to remember that throughout

a drilling process, mud characteristics
continually change.

 This includes the requirements in an invert

emulsion fluid for the water-phase salinity or
salt concentration that is present.

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 2

Increasing WPS
Step 1: Calculate ppb salt currently in system:

350
1 X Retort water %
-1
WPS x 10-6

Step 2: Calculate ppb salt required for

desired WPS: 350

1 X Retort water %
-1
WPS x 10-6

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 3

Increasing WPS
Step 3: Calculate ppb salt to add:

ppb desired salt – ppb current salt

percent purity

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 4

EXAMPLE SITUATION

 You are on a rig with 2500 bbl of 15.0 ppg

IEF, a WPS of 200,000 ppm, and 13% retort
water. You need to raise the WPS to
250,000 ppm. Salt is 97% pure. How many
80 lb sks of salt should you add?

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 5

Increasing WPS
1. Calculate ppb salt currently in system:

350
1
-1 x .13 = 11.4 ppb
.200000

2. Calculate ppb desired salt

350
1 -1 x .13 = 15.2 ppb
.250000

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 6

Increasing WPS
3. Calculate ppb salt to add:

15.2 – 11.4
= 3.92 ppb salt per bbl brine
.97

4. Calculate total lbs and sks

of salt to add:
3.92 ppb x 2500 bbl = 9800 lbs

9800 lbs / 80 lbs per sk = 122.5 sks

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 7

Lowering WPS (adding
water)
Step 1: Calculate bbl water currently in the system:
% retort water X system volume = bbl water currently in system

Step 2: Calculate lbs of salt currently in the system:

ppb salt (from table) X bbl water currently in system = total lbs salt current

Step 3: Calculate bbl water required for desired WPS:

total lbs salt current ÷ppb salt desired = bbl water required

Step 4: Calculate bbl water required to decrease WPS:

bbl water required – bbl water present = bbl water to add

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 8

Lowering WPS
 EXAMPLE:
 Change a volume of 1800 bbl from a WPS of
290,000 ppm to a concentration of 200,000 ppm.
The retort is as follows:
OIL 73%
WATER 14%
SOLIDS 13%

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 9

Lowering WPS
Step 1: .14 x 1800 = 252 bbls
Step 2: @ 290,000 ppm, 133.2 lbs salt per bbl water
133.2 lbs x 252 bbl water = 33,566.4 total lbs salt

Step 3: @ 200,000 ppm, 85.10 lbs salt per bbl water

33566.4 total lbs ÷ 85.10 lbs ppb water =
394.4 bbl water required

Step 4: 394.4 bbl required – 252 bbls present =

142.4 bbl to add

FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 10

End
