KNOW AND UNDERSTAND

CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the skills and tasks and challenges
appropriate for middle and late adolescence, and preparatory to early adulthood

CHECKPOINT: What are the stages of development and developmental task?

For every developmental stage, there is an expected

developmental task. What happens when the
expected developmental task are not achieved at the
corresponding developmental stage? How can you
help children achieve these developmental tasks?

A developmental task is a task that arises at or about a certain period in life,

unsuccessful achievement of which leads to inability to perform tasks associated
with the next period or stage in life.
A person moves from one stage to the next by means of successful resolution
of problems or performance of certain developmental tasks.
Why are developmental tasks important? Achieving adolescent developmental
tasks requires a person to develop personal independence and a philosophy of
life. ... The peer group plays a major role in facilitating the achievement of adoles-
cents' developmental tasks by providing a context in which some of
these tasks can be accomplished.

According to R. Harvighurst
a developmental-task is a task which an
individual ... and young people want to
solve problems themselves (the active
learner)... with the help of
different development models into
different development stages.

Lets explore more about the human development...

.
The Stages of Human Development

1. Pre-natal Period
2. Infancy (birth – 2 years)
3. Early Childhood (3 – 5 years)
4. Middle and Late Childhood (6 to 12 years)
5. Adolescence (13 – 18 years)
6. Early Adulthood (19 – 29 years)
7. Middle Adulthood (30 – 60 years)
8. Late Adulthood (61 years and above)

PRE-NATAL

Prenatal is defined
3 phases
as previous to birth or
to giving birth. germinal stage = first 2 weeks conception, im-
Prenatal care is when plantation, formation of placenta

INFANCY (Birth—2 Years)

It is the state or period of early

childhood or babyhood, the early
stage in the development or growth
of something. is defined as the first
year of life and is the period of most
rapid growth after birth. As a toddler,
humans develop motor skills, such
as the ability to walk, and
communication skills.

EARLY CHILDHOOD (3 – 5 YEARS)

Is defined as the period from birth to
five years old, is a time of remarkable
growth with brain development at its peak.
During this stage, children are highly
influenced by the environment and the
people that surround them.
It is optimal that an environment is
provided that encourages physical
development and allows the children to
explore and try out new things. The
physical development in children follows a
pattern. The large muscles develop before
the small muscles. The large muscles are
used for walking, running and other
physical activities. These are known as
gross motor skills. Small muscles are
used for fine motor skills such as picking
up objects, writing, drawing, throwing and
catching.

MIDDLE AND LATE CHILDHOOD

It spans the ages between
early childhood and adolescence,
approximately ages 6 to 12. Children
gain greater control over the movement
of their bodies, mastering many gross
and fine motor skills that eluded the
younger child.
It is a time when children develop
foundational skills for building healthy
social relationships and learn roles that
will prepare them for adolescence and
adulthood.

.
ADOLESCENCE

It is a transitional stage of physical and

psychological development that generally
occurs during the period from puberty to
legal adulthood. Adolescence is usually
associated with the teenage years, but its
physical, psychological or cultural
expressions may begin earlier and end
later.
EARLY ADULTHOOD

In early adulthood our physical abilities

are at their peak, including muscle
strength, reaction time, sensory abilities,
and cardiac functioning. The aging
process also begins during early
adulthood and is characterized by chang-
es in skin, vision, and reproductive
capability. It is a stage of life when grown
ups become more independent and
explore different life possibilities.
MIDDLE ADULTHOOD

Middle age is the period of age beyond

young adulthood but before the onset of
old age. The different social stages
in adulthood, such as marriage,
parenthood, and work, are loosely deter-
mined by a social clock, a culturally recog-
nized time for each phase.

LATE ADULTHOOD

Late adulthood is the stage of life from

the 60s onward; it constitutes the last
stage of physical change. The Average of
life expectancy varies greatly based on
factors such as socioeconomic status, re-
gion, and access to medical care.

Let’s Practice!

Activity 1: PICTURE ANALYSIS and CLASSIFICATION

Directions: Study the pictures below and provide descriptions to each set,
then answer the following questions.

Guide Questions:
1. Do the pictures suggest the respective developmental stages?
2. Symbolize each developmental stage. Give a symbol that stands for the
developmental task for each stage.
3. If you were given a chance, which developmental stage would you like to be
in? Why?

Let’s Practice PaMORE!

Activity 2: REFLECTION WRITING

Directions:
Reflect on your early childhood, middle and late childhood days.
Were you able to acquire the developmental tasks expected of
early, middle, late childhood and adolescence? What facilitated
your acquisitions of the ability to perform such tasks? Write our
reflection.

REMEMBER
KEY POINTS
 During infancy (approximately birth to 2 years), the focus is on physical, sen-
sorimotor, and social developmental tasks. Infants are expected to master mo-
tor tasks, such as grasping and hand-to-hand transfer.

 The five leading characteristics of adolescence are biologi-

cal growth and development, an undefined status, increased decision making, in-
creased pressures, and the search for self.

 During adolescence young people will negotiate puberty and the completion of
growth, take on sexually dimorphic body shape, develop new cognitive skills
(including abstract thinking capacities), develop a clearer sense of personal and
sexual identity, and develop a degree of emotional, personal, and financial.

 There are a variety of social changes that may occur as we enter late life, includ-
ing change in work status or loss of spouse and other significant others. ... Retire-
ment also brings a shifting of roles within the home and social system. Many older
adults are in long-term marriages.

 We must learn to appreciate and love ourselves. We accept everything about us.
We use our strengths to excel and shine from others. `
