PROPERTIES OF STEEL SECTION

BUILT-UP SECTIONS

Built-up sections are sections built from other existing sections. The properties of the built-up sections are
calculated based on the properties and dimensions of the source sections and the assembly schema.
Sample Problem-1: The composite section shown in Figure - is made up of C15 x 50 and W21 x 83.

Properties of Channel: Properties of Wide Flange:

d = 381 mm d = 544.30 mm
tw = 18.20 mm tw = 13.10 mm
bf = 94.40 mm bf = 212.20 mm
tf = 16.50 mm tf = 21.20 mm
A = 9484 mm 2 A = 15677 mm 2
x = 20.27 mm Ix = 761.704 x10 6 mm 4
Ix = 168.157 x10 6 mm 4 Iy = 33.881 x10 6 mm 4
Iy = 4.579 x10 6 mm 4

Determine the following:

a) Total Area
b) Location of centroids
c) Moment of inertia
d) Radius of Gyration
e) Elastic Section of Modulus

SOLUTION:

Part a:

A = AC + AW
A = 9484 + 15677
A = 25161 mm 2 ((Answer))
