HYDRAULIC DESIGN OF RIVER SLUICE IN SPILLWAY PIER

Ref: IS:11485-1985 – Criteria for Hydraulic design of sluices in concrete and masonry dams.

Introduction:
Sluices are provided in the body of the dam to release regulated supplies of water for a variety of purposes
such as river diversion, Irrigation, water supply for municipal & industrial uses etc. In the present case, the
sluice is provided in the Spillway pier(Refer cl.3.5.2 0f IS: 11485 - 1985)
Reservoir standards:
1. T.B.L. = + 129.80 M
2. M.W.L. = + 126.00 M
3. F.R.L. = + 126.00 M
4. M.D.D.L. = + 95.40 M
5. Deepest foundation level = + 84.00 M
6. Sill level of sluice = + 93.00 M
7. Number of sluices = 1
8. Size of sluice = 1 m x 1.5 m

Size of sluice:
As per clause 3.2 of 11485-1985, the shape of sluice is normally kept rectangular. Hence the sluice size is
provided as 1 m X 1.5 m.

Sill level of sluice:

Sill levell of the sluice is kept at 93 m keeping in view the MDDL: 95.4 M and 1/3rd height of the bodywall above
the ground level is going to be siltedup.

Discharge through sluice: ( as per IS: 11485 - 1985, P -6)

Discharge through sluice under pressured flow can be estimated by the formula
HT = KL V2 / 2 g
Where
HT = Total head needed to overcome various head losses to
deliver the required discharge.
KL = Constant, which is obtained after considering all the losses in
the system.
V = Velocity in the portion of the sluice where the cross sectional
area a

At MDDL + 95.4 Discharge through the sluice:

Sill level of sluice = + 93.00 M
Top level of sluice = + 94.50 M
M.D.D.L. = + 95.40 M
\ Driving head at MDDL = 95.4 - 94.5
= 0.90 m
V2 / 2g = 0.90 m
\V = SQRT( 0.9 * 2 * 9.81)
= 4.20 m/sec
Discharge throgh each vent = Area x Velocity
= 1 * 1.5 * 4.2
3
= 6.303 m /sec
Total Discharge throgh River sluices = 1 * 6.303
3
= 6.303 m /sec

At FRL + 126 Discharge through the sluice:

Sill level of sluice = + 93.00 M
Top level of sluice = + 94.50 M
FRL = + 126.00 M
\ Driving head at MDDL = 126 - 94.5
= 31.50 m
V2 / 2g = 31.50 m
\V = SQRT( 31.5 * 2 * 9.81)
= 24.86 m/sec
Discharge throgh each vent = Area x Velocity
= 1 * 1.5 * 24.86
3
= 37.290 m /sec
Total Discharge throgh River sluices = 1 * 37.29
3
= 37.290 m /sec
Alternatively,
As per cl.3.1.2.1 of IS:11485-1985, Q
= 2/3 Ö2g C L (H13/2 – H23/2)
L = Width of sluice
= 1.00 m
C = 0.63 (table 1)
H1 = 126 - 93
= 33.000 m
H2 = 126 - 94.5
= 31.50 m
\Q = 2/3 * SQRT(2 * 9.81) * 0.63 * 1 * ( 33 ^ (3/2) - 31.5 ^ (3/2))
= 23.770 Cumecs

Bell mouth Entry Transitions:

The effective functioning of a sluice depends to a great extent on the design of its entry transitions. A bell
mouth entrance is hence provided.

i. Top curve:
For rectangular sluice, as per cl 3.3.2 the equation for top contraction curve is defined as
1.5
2 2 2 2
(X / D ) + (Y / 0.33D ) = 1 X 0.500 m
where D is the vertical height of sluice
0.33 D = 1/3 * 1.5 Y
= 0.500 m
For x = 0.0; y = 0.5

Design reinforcement around River sluice

Refer Text book Hydro Power Structures

by R.S Vashney

Sluice size = 1.000 x 1.500 m

Centre line of elevation u.s. = 93.750 m
Sluice size on u/s face with bell mouthing = 1.667 x 2.500 m
Reservior elevation = 126.000 m

Solution
Design Criteria

1 Reinforcement around sluice will be located on the basis of U.S.B.R Tech.

Memorandum No. 457

2 The reinforcement will be worked out for an equivalent circular opening area equal to
the area of the sluice i.e. 1.000 x 1.500 = 1.500 Sq.m.
The reinforcement worked out will be increased by 30%
to account for redistribution to concentration at corners.

3 The downstream end sluice is designed as per standared pressure para 15.8.
(This part of design is not given below)

4 The reinforcement will be designed for the following cases.

I. (i) Stresses due to dam loads and hydrostatic pressure (ss)

(ii) Stresses due to internal pressure (p)

II. (i) Stresses due to dam loads and hydraustatic pressure sn

(ii) Stresses due to internal pressure (p)
(iii) Stresses due to temperature gradient

2
in case I, the stresses in steel will be taken as 11250 t/m
2
and under structural condition stresses equivalent to 14000 t/m
will be allowed. Greater of the reinforcemets will be provided.

5 Stresses in each case will be worked out under the following conditions of loading
(i) Reservior empty with no tail water, both horizontal and vertical earthquake acting.
(ii) Reservior at elevation 126.000 m gates closed,
no tail water, no uplift, both horizontal and vertical earthquake considered.

LOADING STRESSS
The following values of normal stresses have been actually calculated for different loading
conditions by standard garvity analysis.

Case I
Reservior empty, no tail water, horizontal earthquake force acting upstream and vertical
2
earthquake force acting down sn = 91.32 t/m
Case II
Reservior at elevation 126m, no tail water, horizontal earthquake force acting down,
2
uplift not considered sn = 72.31 t/m
Case III
Reservior at elevation 126m. No tail water, horizontal earthquake force acting upstream,
vertical earthquake force acting down, uplift considered.
2
sn = 68.56 t/m
Only stresses in case I and II will be considered, as stresses in case III are less.

Total Moment 1427.59

Leverarm = 1427.59 / 247.31 = 5.772 m

Eccentricity = 4.500 - 5.77 = 1.272 m
B/6 = 9.000 /6 = 1.500 m > 1.272 m Hence No Tension

MAX. STRESS = 247.31 x {1 + 6 x 1.272 } = 50.79 t/m²

9.00 9.000 ( Compression )
MIN STRESS = 247.31 x {1 - 6 x 1.272 } = 4.17 t/m²
9.00 9.000 ( Compression )

FOS for Sliding = Σ MR/ Σ MO 1019.43 / 221.20 = 4.609 > 1.5 SAFE
FOS for Overturning = μ (Σ v/ Σ H ) 0.58 x 247.31 / 53.642 = 2.662 > 1.2 SAFE
