LEARNING OUTCOMES
Visual Presentation Given the visual presentation, the participant will be able to:
• Perform Relay Output programming.
• Identify the number and type of relays used on the EMCP 4.1 and 4.2.
• Identiy the current limits and wiring of the outputs.
• Identify the programming of Relay and Digital Outputs.
• Identify the difference between Relay and Digital Outputs.

Lab 1 Given an EMCP 4.2 Simulator or a generator equipped with an EMCP 4.2 Control,
the appropriate reference material, and the Lab 1 Worksheet, participants will be
able to:
• Demonstrate Relay Output programming.
• Demonstrate the wiring of Relay Outputs.
• Demonstrate the programming of Relay Outputs.
• Demonstrate the wiring of Digital Outputs.
• Demonstrate the programming of Digital Outputs.

LAB 1 Worksheet: Output Programming

Perform the following lab tasks and record your answers when applicable. If using a generator for the lab, the generator should
remain off until the steps requiring a running generator. Verify with the instructor before any generator is started. After each
step, verify with the instructor before proceeding to the next step.

1. Program switch 1 (Digital Input 1) for Low Fuel Level Warning. Switch 1 is a normally open switch in the down
position. Verify a Low Fuel Level Warning is generated when the switch is active.
2. Program switch 2 (Digital Input 2) for a Low Fuel Level Shutdown. Verify a Low Fuel Level Shutdown is generated
when the switch is active.
3. Program Relay Output 3 for Low Fuel Level Warning. Operate switch 1 to verify Relay Output 3 energizes and the
panel light is on.
4. Program Relay Output 4 for a Common Shutdown. Use switch 2 to check for proper operation.

NOTE: Steps 5 to 8 are using a generator to complete.

5. Mount a Cat Slim Line Relay (347-0328) on the generator DIN Rail. Using the generator schematics, wire Digital
Output 1 to the relay. The +DC will have to be wired to the +DC connection on the relay.
6. Program Digital Output 1 to energize on Low Fuel Level Warning. Use switch 1 to verify proper operation. The LED
on the relay will light when it is energized.
7. The next few steps will be used to wire an Engine Running signal into the EMCP 4. The input will be wired as a
Custom Event, and a Modifiable String will show Engine Running when the engine is above 400 RPM (an 1800 RPM
engine). A minimum of one input and one output is required to create an engine running signal. Verify that Relay
Output 7 (or 8) has a dry contact available. Program Relay Output 7 (or 8) for Engine Running.
8. Wire a -DC voltage to the common of Relay Output 7. Wire the normally open side of Relay Output 7 to an unused
Digital Input.
9. Program the Digital Input for a Custom Event. The Custom Event has to be an Active Only Event in the Response
Configuration block.
10. Program the Modifiable String to read “Engine Running” on line one.
11. Before verifying the program works, check with the instructor before starting the engine. Verify the Event Log will
read “Engine Running” without an amber Warning Light.
NOTE: When using a simulator in class, use switch 2 instead of wiring through a Relay Output.
