Answers are to be completed in the spaces provided.
Ensure that you show all working for any question worth more than one mark.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.
Any diagrams in this test paper are NOT drawn to scale.

1. The circle 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 4𝑥 − 2𝑦 − 20 = 0 has centre 𝐶 and passes through points 𝐴 and 𝐵.

(a) State the coordinates of 𝐶. [2]

1
2. The graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) is transformed to the graph of 𝑦 = 1 + 𝑓(2 𝑥).

Describe fully the two single transformations which have been combined to give the [4]
resulting transformation.
3. The diagram shows part of the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥).

Which of the following diagrams could be the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑓(𝑥) + 1? [1]

Answer: ……………….
4.

The circle 𝐶 has centre 𝑃(7, 8) and passes through the point 𝑄(10, 13), as shown in
Figure 2.

(a) Find the length 𝑃𝑄, giving your answer as an exact value. [2]

(b) Hence write down an equation for 𝐶. [2]

4.(continued)

The line 𝑙 is a tangent to 𝐶 at the point 𝑄, as shown in Figure 2.

(c) Find an equation for 𝑙, giving your answer in the form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0, where [4]
𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are integers.
5.

Figure 1 shows a sketch of the curve with equation 𝑦 = 𝑔(𝑥).

The curve has a single turning point, a minimum, at the point 𝑀(4, – 1.5).
The curve crosses the 𝑥-axis at two points, 𝑃(2, 0) and 𝑄(7, 0).
The curve crosses the 𝑦-axis at a single point 𝑅(0, 5).

(a) State the coordinates of the turning point on the curve with equation 𝑦 = 2𝑔(𝑥). [1]

(b) State the largest root of the equation 𝑔(𝑥 + 1) = 0. [1]

(c) State the set of values of 𝑥 for which −𝑔(𝑥) ≤ 0. [1]

Given that the equation 𝑔(𝑥) + 𝑘 = 0, where 𝑘 is a constant, has no real roots,

(d) state the range of possible values for 𝑘. [1]

6. Functions f and g are defined for 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅 by
𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 2 for 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, where 𝑘 is a constant
4
𝑔(𝑥) = for 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 𝑥 ≠ −1
𝑥+1

(a) Find the value of 𝑓𝑔(7). [1]

(b) Find the values of 𝑥 for which 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = 𝑔−1 (𝑥). [5]
7. The function ℎ is defined by ℎ(𝑥) = −𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 5 for 𝑥 ≥ 𝑘 where 𝑘 is a constant.

Find the smallest value of 𝑘 for which ℎ has an inverse and find the expression for [6]
ℎ −1 (𝑥) and state the domain of ℎ−1.
8. The function 𝑓 is defined, for 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅, by 𝑓: 𝑥 → 𝑥 2 + 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏, where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are
constants.
(a) In the case where 𝑎 = 6 and 𝑏 = −8, find the range of 𝑓. [1]

(b) Show that if the equation 𝑓(𝑥 + 𝑎) = 𝑎 has no real roots, then 𝑎2 < 4(𝑏 − 𝑎). [3]
