THIS USE OF PRESENT SIMPLE IS VERY SIMILAR TO “HABITS OR ROUTINES”

Do you sometimes cook for your sister?

She does not always do her homework.

Ice melts above 0º C.

You do not see in the dark.

THIS USE OF PRESENT SIMPLE IS SOMEHOW RELATED TO THE FUTURE, BUT


SINCE IT SHOWS A KIND OF HABIT OR ROUTINE THE PRESENT SIMPLE IS
USED.

Are they temporarily living with their uncle? Yes, until they find an apartment.

I am studying in Berlin this year (next year, I will go back home)

María is currently driving her mother’s car (because her own car is being repaired).

She is not working for the time being


WORDS THAT HELP US IDENTIFY THIS USE: temporarily, currently, for the time
being, etc. These words go before the main verb.
The actions or situations in sentences like those above may be for a long period
of time ( a week, month, year), but they are not permanent and are expected to
finish sooner or later.
Present Continuous: Actions in
progress at the time of speaking
Are you playing a computer game right now?
We are not watching TV right now.
The children are screaming at the moment.
Right now, I am using my laptop.

WORDS THAT HELP US IDENTIFY THIS USE: at the moment, now, right now,
today, tonight. These words go at the end of the sentence. If you want to use the
at the beginning, you need to write a “,”

He is visiting the doctor tomorrow.
Mary is not cooking for us next week.

These words go at the between the verb “to be” and the main verb.
