Gabo Gender Base Essay

The document discusses research on differences in sexuality, identity, and experiences of violence between genders. It notes that while it was once assumed these areas were very different, researchers now recognize the impact of society and changing social roles. Research has found that female sexuality and sexual orientation may be less defined and more influenced by external factors compared to males. Studies also show women experience more variation in sexual behavior and drive over time. Additionally, gender-based violence disproportionately impacts women and can remove their social rights.

Gabriel A Martinez Dr.

Tonja Olive DSSA 100 16 November 2011 Sexuality, Identity and Violence between Genders For centuries, it was assumed that sexuality, identity, and violence differed tremendously between the genders. In 1970, when the civil rights movement occurred any sexual differences between men and women were recognized to the impact of society. As researchers worked on the human sexuality, they assumed that the roles of women and men continued to change in our society, and resulting to have different experiences of sexuality. The female sexuality supports the idea that sexual orientation in women is different from that in men. Men seem to be more definite in their sexual orientation; they are more likely to be either heterosexual or homosexual. The violence against women, and the threat of it, is a form of gender-based violence that withdraws women of their rights socially before the law becomes involved. Gender base violence affects everyone, but it affects mainly girls and women, sexually and physically. Researcher stated the work on human sexuality in the 1960's and 1970s; was said that the sexual response worked the same for both men and women. There were four stages of sexual arousal, which were excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. (MFI Group Inc.) Researchers said that men and women differ noticeably in the nature of their sexuality. They found that some women, but hardly any men,

showed patterns of large swings in point of sexual activity. A woman might go through a phase of having a great deal of sex, then have no sexual activity of any sort for months, and then enter into another phase of having a great deal of sex. If a male were to experience a romantic break-up or a physical separation from his sex partner, he would tend to keep his orgasm rate constant by resorting to masturbation or other activities, but women did not necessarily do this. Women on the other hand, are less likely to become spontaneously sexually aroused and their sexual desire is much more reactive to their surrounding circumstances. (Chivers, Seto, and Blanchard) The gender identity research supports that female sexuality supports the idea that sexual orientation in women is different from that in men. They view that men seem to be more definite in their sexual orientation; they are more likely to be either heterosexual or homosexual. This is supported by studies using the Kinsey scale of sexual orientation, in were women are more expected than men to fall in the middle of the scale, while men are more prone to fall on either end. (Gangestad and Martin) Researcher Roy Baumeister stated that women's sexuality primarily varies from that of men. Men have a stable biologically determined sex drive and women, on the other hand, have a much more inconstant sex drive, that becomes open to the surrounding settings and circumstances. He stated that women have greater variation both in the level of sexual activity and choice of gender over time. Additionally, women's identity is far more influenced by cultural factors, such as education, religion, and peer and parental attitudes. (Baumeister)

The violence against women, and the threat of it, is a form of gender-based violence that removes women of their rights socially before the law becomes involved. Gender base violence affects everyone, but it affects mainly girls and women, sexually and physically. The genders roles of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and men who do not act according to dominant masculine gender roles, are affected to the gender-based violence. The cruelty of the punishment for men who do not act according to the demands of male gender roles gay, bisexual or heterosexual can be in danger of the assumptions about gender. Physical violence can be beating, burning, kicking, punching, biting, or killing, the use of weapons, or tearing out ones hair. Some others also include trafficking and slavery in the set of physical violence because initial pressure is often experienced, and the young women and men involved end up becoming victims of further violence as a result of their enslavement. (European Youth Centre)

In conclusion sexuality, identity, and violence have tremendously changed between the genders. Since 1970, when the civil rights movement occurred and now the sexual differences between men and women are still recognized. The roles of women and men continued to change in our society, and resulting to have different experiences of sexuality, identity, and violence.
