3.0 REFERENCES
3.1 Codes of Practice
The building was designed in accordance with the design requirements of
relevant government gazettes and latest relevant codes. The following is a list of
codes and standards proposed to be used in the checked of this project.
a) ACI 318M-19
b) IBC 2009
c) IRAQ SEISMIC CODE 20017
d) ASCE-16
3.2 SOIL DATA
a) ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY = 110 Kn/m2 F.S =3
b) WATER TABLE LEVEL AT (2.0) M below the existing ground surface

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

4.1 LIST OF LOADS

DL: dead loads consisting of weight of the structure itself.
SDL : superimposed dead loads consisting of weight of all permanent
constructions ,including partition walls and weight of permanent
equipment.

4
L : live load due to intended use and occupancy , including loads due to
movable objects and movable partitions and loads temporarily supported
by the structure during maintenance.
W : wind load ( X- direction & Y- direction)
E : Earthquake load ( X- direction & Y- direction)
4.2 Description of load
The structure will be controlled against construction loads.
4.2.1 Dead loads (D)
Dead weight of structural components is determined on the basis of
geometrical characteristics and material density.
The following unit masses will be used :
-reinforced concrete = 24 Kn/m3
-Waterproofing and roof insulation = 0.3 Kn/m2
- wall part ion = 7 Kn/m3
-Concrete pavers = 22 Kn/m3
-Mortar = 20 Kn/m3
-Plaster = 10 Kn/m3
-Rendering = 22 Kn/m3
-Tile = 24 Kn/m3
-False ceiling =0.3 Kn/m2
-Lightweight partition (per unit area of floor) = 1.0 Kn/m2
Roofing finishes:
-Paving tiles (50 mm) = 1.2 Kn/m2
-waterproofing membrane extruded polystyrene = 0.1 Kn/m2

5
-Earth fill = 20 Kn/m3

4.2.2 Live loads

The following distributed loads will be considered:
-Roofs:
Roofs = 1.50 Kn/m2
-Floors:
 Ground floor (family dwellings) = 2.0 Kn/m2
 First floor (family dwellings) = 2.0 Kn/m2
 Corridors = 4.0 Kn/m2
 Stairs = 4.0 Kn/m2

4.2.3 Lateral loads :

A) Wind load :
The following information related to wind loads needs to be used
according to Iraq wind load, regardless of whether wind loads govern
the design of the lateral force-resisting system of the building:
1. Basic wind speed, 100 miles per hour = 44.5 m/sec.
2. Structure type MWFRS (main wind force resisting system)
3. Wind directionality factor kd = 0.85 ; (table 6-4,ASCE 7-16).
4. Occupancy category II; (table 1-1,ASCE 7-16).
5. Wind importance factor, I=1;(table 6-1,ASCE 7-16).
6. Exposure category = C(site adjancent to open fields, ASCE 7-16,6.5.7.2).
7. Topographic factor Kzt = 1.0 (assumed since near open fields, ASCE 7-
16,6.5.7.2).
8. Gust effect factor G=0.85 for rigid str. G for flexible str. Need to be
calculated as per 6.5.8 ASCE 7-16 .
9. External pressure coefficients

6
Windwazrd coefficient (figure 6-6, ASCE 7-16)., leeward coeff. (figure 6-6,
ASCE 7-16)
B) Seismic loading parameters:
The following information related to analysis and design for the lateral
force-resisting system of the building according to Iraq seismic map.
1. Seismic hazard zoning coefff. (clause 3.2.1),Z=I=0.05
2. Seismic importance factor (clause 3.2.2),Z=I
3. Dynamic coeff. Related to soil category (clause 3.2.3),S=I,soil type II
4. Structural system coeff. Specified for various type of structure.
5. Analysis procedure used: Equivalent static force procedure Analysis
according to ASCE 7-16.
