MATHEMATICS INVESTIGATION
CO-PRIME

I. Statement of the Problem

We say that two positive integers are co-primes if their greatest common factor is 1. The four positive
integers less than 10 that are co-prime with 10 are 1,3,7, and 9.

Co-prime numbers are pairs of numbers that do not have any common factor other than 1.
There should be a minimum of two numbers to form a set of co-prime numbers. Such numbers have only 1 as
their highest common factor. If the only common factor of two numbers a and b is 1, then a and b are
co-prime numbers. In this case, (a, b) is said to be a co-prime pair. Co-prime numbers are also referred to as
relatively prime or mutually prime numbers.

II. Organize and Record Data

Number Factor Greatest Common Factor

3 𝟏×𝟑 1

7 𝟏×𝟕 1

9 𝟑×𝟑×𝟏 1

Table 1. List of all the factors of 1, 3, 7, and 9

2
The table show the factor and the greatest common factor of 1, 3, 7, 9. As for the integer 1 multiplying
1 times 1 and the greatest common factor is 1, same for the integer 3 multiplying 1 times 3 and the greatest
common factor is 1, integer 7 is multiplying 1 times 7 also gives as the same greatest common factor which
is 1 same goes with integer 9 multiplying 3 times 3 times 1 also gives as the same greatest factor and that is
1. Notice in this illustration that the 4 given factor that we have which is 1, 3, 7, and 9 if we factor them, we
will have the same greatest common factor of the four and that is 1.

Given below is the list of positive integers with pairs of co-prime 10 as the reference.

Pairs of Co-prime
Numbers
(1,10)
(3,10)
(7,10)
(9,10)

Let’s try if the pairs of integers are a co-prime notice that the number of columns containing pair of
numbers, their factors, common factors of the pair and justification if it is a co-prime or not. Notice that the all
the pair containing the same factor, which is 1 and yes, it is a co-prime because co-prime are pairs of
numbers that do not have any common factor other than 1.

III.Gestating (Optional)

3
IV.Make a Conjecture
Observation:
When we get the factors of 10,9,7,3,1, their greatest common factor is 1.

Numbers Their factors Co-prime Number

1 1 0

3 1, 3 1,2

7 1, 7 1,2,3,4,5,6

9 1, 3, 3 1,4,5,7

10 1,2,5 1,3,7,9

Conjecture:
Using the patterns and ideas or observations, we came up with the conjecture that what is the value of N is
also the possible co-prime number
Let N as the term of possible co-prime number
Let a,b as the factor of the N
Formula:

N= N(1-1/a)(1-1/b)
V.Verify the conjecture

We are done in verifying the common factor and it is a co-prime. However, we also observe that
there is a pattern in these given integers if we add 1 to 0 it is equal to 1, 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 4 = 7, 3 + 6 = 9, 2+8=
10 by adding 2 to the next number we can get the value of the number 1,3,7,9 and 10. we can get the value

4
of the second number added we also come up with the formula to get the term of the possible co-prime of
each number given on the table.

CONCLUSION:
All the tables above show the possible co-prime of each number given. It also show that the co-
prime of each number is decreasing.

VI.Justify the Conjecture

Summary
Number Term Co-prime Numbers
10 4 1,3,7,9
9 4 1,4,5,7
7 6 1,2,3,4,5,6
3 2 1,2
1 0 0

CONCLUSION:
The table above show that whatever the possible co-prime number of 10,9,7,3,1 is lower to the given
number and it also that all of the given number has the same co-prime number which is 1.
Therefore the 1,3,7,9 are co-prime of 10.

In finding the sum of co-prime of 10 the first thing that well do is to find the factor of 10 and we know
that the factor of 10 are 1 × 2 × 5 and letting a = 1, b = 2, c = 5, n = 10.

VII. SUMMARY
 The co-prime of 10 are 1,3,7,9 since the greatest common factor is 1.
 The value of the co-prime of each number is decreasing
 The sum of N is the number of term which the possible co-prime number of 10.
 The co-prime number of 10 is odd number.
