Parity is Discrete Transformation?

·  LagrangeEuler ·  Dec 18, 2013 ·  Discrete Parity Transformation

In summary, parity is a fundamental concept in physics that refers to the symmetry

of a physical system under spatial inversion. The discrete transformation of parity
involves flipping the sign of all three spatial coordinates, resulting in a mirror image
of the original system. Parity is closely related to the conservation of angular
momentum, and it is a discrete transformation that can only occur in specific, finite
steps. In particle physics, the concept of parity is important for understanding
fundamental symmetries and studying subatomic particles and their interactions.

Could you explain me dif f erence between discrete and continual transf ormation?

"T is a discrete transformation" means that there's no continuous way of

changing from the identity transformation to T

ie there's no system of transformations T(k) with k in [0,1], with T = T(1), I = T(0)

eg if T is space inversion, there's no half-way stage between say a left foot and a
right foot

Related to Parity is Discrete Transformation?

1. What is parity in physics?

Parity is a fundamental concept in physics that refers to the symmetry of a physical

system under spatial inversion, which is the transformation of a system's coordinates
from (x,y,z) to (-x,-y,-z). This means that if the coordinates of a system are changed in
this way, the laws of physics should remain the same.

2. What is the discrete transformation of parity?

The discrete transformation of parity is a specific type of parity transformation that
involves flipping the sign of all three spatial coordinates (x, y, and z) at the same time.
This results in a mirror image of the original system, and the laws of physics should
still hold true.

3. How is parity related to the conservation of angular momentum?

Parity is closely related to the conservation of angular momentum, which states that
the total angular momentum of a system remains constant unless an external torque
is applied. Since parity transformation involves flipping the sign of coordinates, it can
affect the direction of angular momentum and therefore must be conserved.

4. What does it mean for parity to be a discrete transformation?

Discrete means that the transformation can only occur in specific, finite steps. In the
case of parity, the transformation can only occur by flipping all three spatial
coordinates at the same time. This is in contrast to a continuous transformation,
which can happen continuously and smoothly.

5. Why is the concept of parity important in particle physics?

Parity is important in particle physics because it helps us understand the fundamental

symmetries of the universe. It also plays a crucial role in the study of subatomic
particles and their interactions. By studying how particles behave under parity
transformations, scientists can gain insights into the underlying laws and principles
that govern the universe.
