SECTION A

[24 MARKS]
Compulsory
1. The figure below is a type of network cable. Study it carefully and use it to answer the questions that follows.
a) Name the figure above
Fibre Optic network cable
[2 marks]

b) Name the parts labelled A, B, C, D and E

A – cable jacket
B – strengthening fibers
C – coating
D – cladding
E - core
[5 marks = 1 mark each]

c) Mention any one function of the parts labelled A, B, C, D and E

A – the outermost layer of the fiber cable
B – it helps protect the core against damages during installation or from being crushed
C – this layer of thicker plastic surrounds the cladding and protects the fiber core
D – it protects the core and causes the necessary reflections to allow light to travel through the fibre-core segment
E – the physical component that transports the optical data signal, made up of a continuous strand of glass
[5 marks = 1 mark each]

d) Mention the other types of network cable and explain each

 Coaxial cable – a type of electrical cable that contains a central copper wire surrounded by insulation, a braided
or foil shield, and an outer plastic jacket, used for transmitting high-frequency signals such as internet, cable TV,
and phone connections

 Twisted pair cable – it is a type of copper wire cable that contains two insulated copper wires twisted together to
reduce electromagnetic interferences (EMI), which helps to cancel out noise and crosstalk between the wires,
improving signal quality and data transmission
[5 marks = 2 ½ mark each]

e) State and name the types of the figure above and explain
 Single-mode fiber optic cable – it contains a single strand of glass or plastic fiber with a very small diameter,
designed for a long-distance, high-speed data transmission and has a higher bandwidth and a lower attenuation

 Multi-mode fiber optic cable – it contains multiple strands of glass or plastic fiber with a larger diameter,
designed for shorter-distance, high-speed data transmissions and has a lower bandwidth and a higher attenuation
[7 marks = 3 ½ mark each]
