QA project

Sep 2023
Welcome

Thank you for your interest in helping QA the AppMap product!

If you have questions or feedback about the product at any point feel free to
email me directly at [email protected], or DM me via UpWork.

- Brian Kelly, VP Eng @ AppMap

Introduction
AppMap is an open-source software analysis tool that generates visual depictions of
running code for the purpose of understanding a codebase.

AppMap observes how an application runs, and creates recordings in JSON format on
disk containing the events that happened at runtime.

Our plugins for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs enable developers to use AppMap in
their code editors. We release these plugins to the VS Code and JetBrains
marketplaces regularly.

While there are many automated tests for them already, we also like to perform
manual QA on our plugins to check for issues that are hard to verify automatically, and
to make sure that they work with the widest possible set of combinations and use
cases.
Who should apply?
If you…
● have experience writing code in real-world applications in Java, Python, or Ruby
● have worked as a SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test)
● enjoy finding issues through exploratory testing
● get annoyed by inconsistencies
● appreciate the value of professional quality assurance

Then you should apply!

If however you think “QA” means “blindly following someone else’s test plan like a
robot without thinking”, then this won’t be the job for you :(
This Project
This project starts with a small scope of work. For staff who get hired, it will
then expand into a regular and continuous feed of quality-related tasks done
on pre-release versions of the software.

The initial project simply requires that the AppMap plugins for both VS Code
and JetBrains editors be downloaded, installed, and used on an appropriate
project. Feedback on issues discovered would then be sent to us in Loom
and written form.

Details on the initial project follow on the next slide.

Project Tasks
This initial project contains the following tasks:

1. Using the latest version of IntelliJ, compile and run a backend Java
application that uses Spring. If you can’t find one, use this sample app.
2. Install the AppMap plugin from the JetBrains marketplace into IntelliJ.
3. Follow the AppMap instructions that appear to record AppMaps of your
application’s behavior.
4. For any issues that occur that you believe should be addressed by our
development team, report them in a suitable format (Google doc, Loom,
screenshots, etc.) that would make them understandable by our team.
If all goes well…

Our plan is to have a long-standing relationship with high-quality QA

engineers who can help shape the future of our product through excellent
feedback on its quality.

Please keep this in mind as you work through this initial project!
