SMART METERING

SYSTEM

Supervised by Dr. A. M. Jubril

INTRODUCTION
This project focuses on the
necessity of smart

metering system in today’s rapidly

evolving energy landscape to
monitor and manage energy
consumption. With this project, we
aim to explore the key features and
benefits of this transformative
technology.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Nigeria faces a significant
challenge in the energy sector.
The country struggles with

insufficient and unreliable power

generation, traditional energy
metering methods lack the ability
to provide real-time data and
insights into energy usage
patterns, leading to inefficiencies
in energy management and billing
processes.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Due to the inefficiencies in energy management,

here are the objectives of the proposed system:

To design and develop an automated energy metering system

utilizing arduino and internet of things (IoT) technology.

To enhance energy management practices by providing real-time

data on consumer energy consumption.

To contribute to the sustainability of energy resources by

providing accurate monitoring and billing of energy usage.

PROJECT

CONCEPT

The aim of this project is to develop a

Smart Energy Metering System that leverages Internet of Things (IoT) technology and

Arduino microcontrollers to transform conventional energy meters into smart meters.

By incorporating features such as remote monitoring, notification alerts, and automatic

meter control, the system aims to enhance energy management practices and promote

efficient resource utilization.

METHODOLOGY
Arduino Uno, which usually is the brain-box of projects like this one,
functions as the receiver of

the code running the experiment. The sensors are installed in series
with the live wire feeding power

outlets in each room. They measure the current flowing through the
circuit,

providing data on the room’s energy consumption. The LCD display

provides a user interface. The Arduino code

can be programmed to show real-time data like current consumption

(amps) for

each room and potentially calculated power consumption (watts). The

Wi-Fi module allows the system to connect to a Wi-Fi

network.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, smart metering systems represent a

significant advancement in energy management

technology, offering real-time insights, enhanced

efficiency, and greater control over energy consumption.

As we continue to embrace innovation in the pursuit of

sustainability and efficiency, smart metering systems will

undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of

energy management and ushering in a more intelligent

and sustainable world.
