How to setup a home network

without internet.
This article understands how to setup a home network without internet. Assuming that there
is a combination of wired and wireless users, a wireless router can be used. Troubleshooting
tips are also provided at the end of the section.

Step 1

Purchase a wireless router in case you do not have one.

Check out wireless routers on amazon

Step 2

Wireless routers comes typically with 4 port inbuilt switch. Connect the wired users to the
inbuilt ports on the switches.

Manually configure the DHCP server on the router. The screenshot is shown below.
The LAN IP address of the router is 192.168.0.1. Configure the IP address range of the
DHCP server (IP Pool range) as shown above. This is required for providing IP address to
users on the network for internal communication. Since there is no internet, DNS
configuration is not required, although it can be set as 192.168.0.1.

Step 4

Check if the wired user / computer has received an IP address belonging to the above pool.
This can be verified using ipconfig command on the command prompt of the system.

Step 5

Configure a SSID name for wireless access , along with associated security protocols like
WEP or WPA. Connect the wireless device (Laptop / Smartphone) to the SSID by
configuring appropriate security parameters for WEP / WPA. Check if the laptop has
received an IP address belonging to the above pool. This can be verified
using ipconfig command on the command prompt of the system.
Ping the systems to check if basic connectivity is working between them. For example if the
IP address of the wired system is 192.168.0.2 , type the command ping 192.168.0.2 from the
command prompt on the wireless device to test basic connectivity.

1. Unable to receive IP address.

If any system on the network is unable to receive an IP address, check if the system is
configured as a DHCP client. Also check if the DHCP server on the router is configured
appropriately.

2. Unable to ping devices on the network

Check if both systems have received an IP address from the DHCP server. Check if a desktop
firewall on any of the systems are not blocking any ping packets. Ensure that the systems
have not been configured accidentally with a static IP address in a different range.

How To Setup A Wireless Network Without

Internet?
By following the guidelines, you will be able to set up a wireless network
without internet conveniently. What you will be needing is a wireless
network, network switch, and Ethernet cables. You will have to follow these
steps.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to a Power Source:
Begin by connecting your router to the power source. You will have to power it
on with the help of an adapter. Make sure that the signal LEDs of the router is
turned on.

Step 2: Connect Your Router to a PC:

You will have to look for the Ethernet ports. Although most of the routers have
four ports, they will feature a mark or a colored Ethernet port. However, you
don’t have to use the internet Ethernet port. You can now use the Ethernet
cable to connect one part with your computer and the other to the router.

Step 3: Configure Your Router’s DHCP Server:

The next step is to configure the DHCP server of your router. Here is how you
can do that.

Go to any web browser and enter the IP address of the router.

On the router’s settings page, you will have to log in.

Navigate to the DHCP page.

Initiate the IP pool range. You must leave the IP address of the router. If the IP
address is 192.168.0.1, the setup range will be 192.168.0.2 to 192.1 68.0.254.

Hit on the option Apply.

Step 4: Set up the wireless settings:
In the next step, you will have to change the wireless settings. All you have to
do is to change the username and password. These are the steps to do it.

Navigate to the router’s wireless configuration menu.

Set up the name of the SSID.

The security protocol must be set up to WPA2.

Enter a strong password and hit on Apply.

The router can take some time for the boot-up process

Step 5: Test A Device:

Begin by logging into the network and turning off the Wi-Fi of any device.
When the device is connected to any network and shows it, you are ready to
use your home LAN. To use more than three devices, you will have to utilize a
network switch.

Conclusion
The above-mentioned steps will enable you to use your router without an
internet connection. This will offer you many benefits as you can perform
many tasks. All you have to know is that the wireless router allows you to use
it within a local network but not the internet. However, performing all these will
require the wireless router’s IP address.
