COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

2022/2023 SESSION

Department: Mathematics

Course Lecturers: Dr. H. I. Okagbue & Dr. T. J. Akingbade, Dr. O. O. Agboola

Programme: Industrial Mathematics (Statistics Option)

Course Code: MAT 215

Course Title: Mathematics V – Probability Distribution I

Units: 3

Semester: Alpha

Time: 10.00 am – 12.00 noon (Tuesdays) and 10.00 am – 11.00 am (Fridays)

Location: CST Hall 203 and Hall 308

A. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF COURSE

This course is designed to introduce the elementary and basic knowledge of Probability
distributions to the students. Probability distributions are taught to equip the student with a wild
range of tools for analyzing continuous and discrete random variables. Their properties such as
Mean and Variance, Moments and Higher Moments, Central Limit Theorem will also enable the
students to appreciate how these distributions behave.

B. COURSE OBJECTIVES/GOALS

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

i. Know how to calculate Bayes theorem

ii. Differentiate between discrete and continuous probability distributions.

iii. Understand the basic Probability Distributions.

iv. Obtain mean and variance of the distributions

v. Apply it where applicable

C. METHODS OF LECTURE DELIVERY

The lecture/Teaching/learning Method: with active student participation

White Board, lecture notes, Textbook and Power point presentation.

D. COURSE OUTLINES
MODULE 1: PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS;
Week 1: Basic probability.
Week 2: Conditional Probability and Bayes Theorem.
Week 3: Discrete probability distributions and their characteristics
Week 4: Continuous probability distributions and their characteristics
Week 5: Cumulative distributions functions, Mean and Variance
Week 6: Higher Moments

MODULE 2: DISTRIBUTIONS;
Week 7: Binomial and Poisson Distributions
Week 8: Uniform and Normal Distribution

Examination 70marks

G. Ground rules & regulations

Students are to maintain high level of discipline in the following areas
-punctuality
-modest dressing
-quietness
H. Assignments

Students will be given Assignments at the end of each lecture

I. Alignment with Covenant University Vision/Goals

Prayers at the commencement of lectures, thereby complying with the core value of
spirituality of the university.

Students are trained to study earlier before the examinations to ensure that cases of
examination malpractices were reduced and hence maintaining the high level of integrity
required of them.

Students are encouraged to be diligent and accept the responsible of adequate lecture
attendance and cognitive testing, thus building capacity that will help them in the future.

Practical problems are used to develop the critical mind of the students and hence,
inculcate the core value of possibility mentality.
