1 Controller – quick guide

1.1 General information


This section provides only basic information sufficient for proper operation of the ORION controller and the
power supply system. The controller has been programmed and tested in the factory or on site during
installation and in principle does not require any configuring.

If you need to modify controller parameters or functions, please contact Delta service for information and
assistance.

Full operation and configuration manual is to be found in a separate document package prepared by Delta.
Please contact Delta for more information.

1.2 Controller features


ORION is an advanced power supply systems’ controller, ensuring communication between power supply
equipment and user. ORION also features alarm monitoring with local and remote display.

Key ORION features include:

• Visualization of system parameters and status


• Alarming in emergency situations
• System voltage stabilization and temperature compensation (float charge)
• Boost charge control
• Trickle charge control
• Battery tests
• Battery charge current limiting
• Deep battery discharge protection
• Supervision of extended devices (alarms)
• Remote monitoring
• Event logging

Power systems may operate without controller. This is crucial during maintenance works, such as controller
replacement or shutdown. Its failure does not interrupt power system operation.

1.3 Controller overview


ORION controller is a modular device. Its core is the main module.

The module features an LCD display, status LEDs and keypad with four keys providing local user interface.
The front panel of ORION controller also features a LAN socket enabling the connection of the controller
directly to a computer or a local network (LAN), and a USB port.

The main module is plug-and-play compatible. The module is equipped with a central signal connector
enabling easy connection with the backplane, which collects all information and signals from the power
system.

All connections use snap connectors with RJ telephone or clamp plugs.

1.3.1 Controller user interface

Local user interface is used to monitor system operation. It also enables the user to configure basic system
parameters and functions.

Password protection

Menu items enabling modification of operation mode or parameters of the power system are password-
protected. Entering the menus requires entering a password (defined as a specific combination of function
keys). The password may be modified during configuration by Delta service personnel.

Default (factory) password

Main/start screen

Default screen displayed by the controller after approximately 3 minutes after last operation is ended. The
screen graphically presents basic system parameters.

1.3.2 Controller menu structure

All information and messages provided to the user are presented in the hierarchical menu. Particular items in
the main menu contain submenus which may contain detailed messages.

To enter the main menu, press “Enter” when the main screen is displayed.

Note! Certain menu items in ORION main menu are subject to hardware system configuration
(hidden if inactive).

1.3.3 Basic operation using local user interface

1.3.3.1 System status

All system status information is presented in the STATUS menu. The figure below presents selected key
parameters:

Active alarm information is presented in the ALARM menu.

The user may stop alarm signaling in line with pre-set configuration parameters (Alarm Stop item).

1.3.3.2 System log

The LOG menu presents messages concerning the past system operation. The controller logs all alarms
(date and time, alarm type and alarm message), end of each alarm, and other system information crucial for
the user (e.g. auto battery test result, last battery discharge test result, etc.).

1.3.3.3 Battery voltage check

Proper battery operation conditions are key parameters configured during system installation. The user may
verify basic voltage parameters in the CONFIGURATION > BATTERY menu.

1.3.3.4 Time and date settings

The controller is equipped with a real time clock independent from the unit’s status. The clock is powered
from a capacitor. After prolonged shutdown the time and date should be verified and updated in the
controller’s menu or configuration software.

1.3.4 Basic operation using a PC

The controller may be operated and configured using a PC. This is the most user-friendly and recommended
method for communication with the controller.

A PC may be connected to controller through Ethernet port. The LAN (RJ45) socket on the front plate is
used.

The controller Ethernet port supports two operation modes: static and dynamic. In static mode the network
parameters are set manually both in computer and in controller. In dynamic mode, IP address and subnet
mask are automatically set according to RFC 3927 (Zeroconf).

1.3.4.1 Connecting a computer with DHCP enabled

Use this procedure to connect a computer directly to the Ethernet (LAN) interface of ORION.

Make sure that the DHCP is enabled in the computer.

Step 2 Enable the Automatic mode in ORION in the NET CONFIG → MODE menu.

Step 3 Connect the computer to ORION with an Ethernet cable.

Step 4 Wait for a while and let ORION and computer negotiate the network parameters. This can take up to
one minute.

Step 5 Open an internet browser.

Step 6 In the address bar of the internet browser, enter the IP address which is shown in the
NET CONFIG → IP ADDRESS MENU.

Note! The default IP address that is normally given by the factory is http://192.168.100.100.

Note! If the displayed IP address is 169.254.113.000, enter the address in the browser without the
leading zeros as follows: 169.254.113.0.

Note! If the browser cannot connect to ORION, check the proxy server setting in the browser
options. A proxy must not be used.

Step 7 When the ORION configuration and supervision tool login page loads, enter the username
(“monitor”) and password (“orion”) and click “Submit”.

Note! The “monitor” user profile enables readout of ORION status and parameters. To access a
profile enabling modification of configuration parameters, contact Delta authorized service provider
or system administrator.

Step 8 The web interface is now open and displays a welcome page. It is possible to navigate through
ORION using the menu tree on the left-hand side of the screen.

Step 9 Click “Logout” when you are ready.

1.3.4.2 Connecting a computer with fixed IP

Use this procedure to set the ORION IP address manually to enable communication with computer. The
computer IP address must be known.

Step 1 Enable the Manual mode in ORION in the NET CONFIG → MODE menu.

Step 2 Set the ORION IP address in the NET CONFIG → IP ADDRESS menu using the local interface to
the same network area as the computer. Only the numbers in the last section of the IP address may
vary.

Example: The computer IP address is 170.20.110.101. The ORION IP address can therefore be, for
example, 170.20.110.102.

Step 3 Set the ORION subnet mask in the NET CONFIG → SUBNET MASK menu to 255.255.255.0

Step 4 Connect the computer to ORION with an Ethernet cable.

Step 5 Open an internet browser and connect to the defined ORION IP address.

Note! If the IP address contains a zero or zeroes after a period, remove the zeros; for example:
010.120.177.031 → 10.120.177.31.

Note! If the browser cannot connect to ORION, check the proxy server setting in the browser
options. A proxy must not be used.

Step 6 When the ORION configuration and supervision tool login page loads, enter the username
(“monitor”) and password (“orion”) and click “Submit”.

Note! The “monitor” user profile enables readout of ORION status and parameters. To access a
profile enabling modification of configuration parameters, contact Delta authorized service provider
or system administrator.

Step 7 The web interface is now open and displays a welcome page. It is possible to navigate through

1.3.4.3 ORION operation and configuration software

ORION features a WEB server providing a user-friendly interface and operation/configuration tool that may
be launched on any PC with a standard web browser. The ORION WEB server is supported by typical web
browsers available on the market (e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Google Chrome, etc.).

Below presented is the main screen, visible after successful login.

The section provides only basic information necessary to establish a connection and check controller
parameters. If you need to modify controller parameters or functions, please contact Delta service for
information and/or assistance.

1.3.5 Configuring internal AC measurement with single-phase rectifiers

1.3.5.1 Systems without rectifier positioning

In case physical addressing is not used in the system, the phase assignment of single-phase rectifiers needs
to be manually according to the following instructions. The purpose of the assignment is to tell ORION which
rectifier modules are connected to phases 1, 2 and 3.

1.3.5.2 Web user interface
Go to Configuration → Options.

Select “internal – single-phase RM” from drop-down menu for “AC Measurement Type”.

Click “Accept Changes”.

Step 4 Go to Configuration → Rectifier → AC Measurement.

Step 5 Select the line where to assign rectifiers first.

Step 6 Click “Start”.

Step 7 For the rectifier connected to the selected phase, click “Config”.

Step 8 Click “Finish”.

Step 9 Select the next phase and repeat the steps 7 and 8.

Verify the assignment status at the page Status → Rectifier

1.3.5.3 UIM/UIL interface

The selection of the AC Measurement Type cannot be done via UIM/UIL, but the phase assignment is
possible.

Step 1 Go to CONFIGURATION → RECTIFIER → AC MEASUREMENT → PARAMETER and


press ENTER.

Step 2 Select the line where to assign rectifiers to

Step 3 Go to CONFIGURATION → RECTIFIER → AC MEASUREMENT → PHASE


ASSIGNMENT and press ENTER

Step 4 Select “Start” and press ENTER.

Step 5 For the rectifier connected to the selected line, click “Config”.

Step 6 Select “Finish”.

Step 7 Repeat the steps 1-6 for all three lines

Step 8 Verify that the Status has changed to “ok”.

1.3.5.4 Systems with converter positioning

If the positioning of rectifiers is used and the AC measument type “Automatic 3-PH Slot Assignment” is
selected, the controller reads the three-phase voltages from the rectifiers using following logic:

• L1 is read from the first, fourth, seventh, tenth... rectifier in the rectifier position table
• L2 is read from the second, fifth, eight, eleventh... rectifier
• L3 is read from the third, sixth, ninth, twelfth... rectifier

The controller calculates the average voltage from the rectifiers connected to the same phase. If the
measurement is not plausible, it will be not considered in calculation.

1.3.5.5 Web user interface


Go to Configuration → System Architecture → System Parameter.

Select “Automatic 3-PH Slot Assignment” from drop-down menu for “AC Measurement
Type”.

Click “Accept Changes”.

2.3.4 Basic operation using a PC

2.3.5.1 Systems without rectifier positioning

Step 12 For the rectifier connected to the selected line, press the “Config” button.

Step 13 Select “Finish Assignment”

Step 14 Repeat the steps 2-5 for all three lines.

Step 15 Verify that the Status has changed to “ok”.

2.3.5.4 UIM interface

The selection of the AC Measurement Type cannot be done via UIM, but the phase assignment is possible.

Step 1 Go to CONFIGURATION → RECTIFIER → AC MEASUREMENT → PARAMETER and


press ENTER.

Step 5 For the rectifier connected to the selected line, click “Config”.

Step 6 Select “Finish”.

Step 7 Repeat the steps 1-6 for all three lines

Step 8 Verify that the Status has changed to “ok”.

2.3.5.5 Systems with converter positioning

If the positioning of rectifiers is used and the AC measument type “Automatic 3-PH Slot Assignment” is
selected, the controller reads the three-phase voltages from the rectifiers using following logic:

• L1 is read from the first, fourth, seventh, tenth... rectifier in the rectifier position table
• L2 is read from the second, fifth, eight, eleventh... rectifier
• L3 is read from the third, sixth, ninth, twelfth... rectifier

The controller calculates the average voltage from the rectifiers connected to the same phase. If the
measurement is not plausible, it will be not considered in calculation.
