In this lab report template, you will see the explanation in red, and example in green.

An Investigation on…..
Must include the dependent and independent variable, and must be specific (not question form).
Eg: An investigation on how (independent variable) affects (dependent variable)
Please delete all colored parts when you finish writing the report.
Introduction:
B.i
1. What are you going to investigate? (Aim)
2. Why are you doing this investigation? (Purpose)
3. What is the scientific background for this topic? (A summary introduction of relevant information)
4. How are you going to measure this? (Method)
Research Question:
How do(es) ____________________________ affect _______________________________,
measured by ____________?
How does (independent variable) affect the (dependent variable), measured by (a specific variable using a tool)?
B.ii Hypothesis:
If ________________________________________________, then the
_______________________ will _________________________. This is because
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
“If the (independent variable) increases/decreases ...then the (dependent variable) will ….”
The reason is that...(give a scientific reason you learned in class or via research)”
B.iii Variables:
Values:
5 mL, 10 mL, 15mL, 20mL, 25mL
To be measured using the 25mL graduated cylinder, while measuring, place the
cylinder on a stable lab table, and read the number from the meniscus of the
liquid.
Dependent Variable Explanation of how you will measure the variable
Length of plant How was it measured?
Name _ Class _ Date Criterion B
It will be measured from the growth coming out of the soil up to the tip of the
plant in centimeters (cm) using a ruler, and repeated three times.
Controlled Variables
Explanation of how you will control the variable
(at least three)
Give exact values to show you know they are controlled.
Give the instrument and units used to measure this control if necessary.
Amount of soil
Each pot will have 100 g of soil to be measured by a weighing scale. Different
amount of soil might contain different amount of minerals and other nutrients,
it can also affect the retention of water, which might affect how plants grow.
B.iv Materials (please indicate the number, size of each apparatus, and quantity of chemicals you need):
Chemicals Apparatus
State the potential risk specific to this experiment (if applicable) of using the chemicals or apparatus, what to wear,
how to handle the materials, etc.
Sodium hydroxide is corrosive, and it might cause irritation to eyes and skin, gloves and goggles need to be worn.
After the experiment, dispose sodium hydroxide into a disposal container for further treatment (neutralize with
hydrochloric acid).
Name _ Class _ Date Criterion B
B.iv Procedure: (please make sure others can repeat your experiment by following this procedure):
Outline methods that include preparation (making standard solution), experimentation, and measuring/gathering
data. Write step by step.
Do not use personal pronouns (I, we, us, our, his, her, their, him, he, her) in your lab report.
1. Place weighing paper on the balance, and use a spatula to add 1.00g sodium chloride powder.
2. Use 100mL graduated cylinder to measure 100mL distilled water and pour into the 250mL beaker.
