COURSE OUTLINE (MSES4206)

Faculty/School: Faculty of Science Department: Chemistry

Course Title: Electronic Materials Code: MSES4206
Course credit: 4 Course hours per week: 4hours Semester: Second
Lectures: 30 hours Tutorials: 15 hours Practical: 0 hours
Course Prerequisites: None
Instructors: Dr Njong / Dr Hubert Nono
Tel/Email:……………. /[email protected]
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course includes a description bonding in solids based on the free electron theory, MOT, and
band theory will be addressed. The aim is to provide students with the basic understanding of how
semiconductors materials and devices used in the current semiconductor industry and how they
form an integral part of today's electronic industry. The course provides the students with the basic
physics of semiconductor materials. It also covers device fundamentals with emphasis on their
electronic characteristics. Opto-electronic devices such as LEDs, lasers, solar cells, and their
properties will also be covered.

CONTENT
Material parameters and electronic properties of semiconductors are discussed as basic factors in
the engineering of semiconductor devices. Material parameters are related to preparation and
processing methods, and thus to the electronic properties. The implication of materials parameters
and properties on selected devices are discussed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this course the student will be able to (i) Explain the electronic properties of metals,
semiconductors, and insulators using band theory; (ii) describe band gaps of various materials in
relation to their properties (iii) Describe metal-semiconductor junctions, p-n junctions (iv) Explain
functioning of semiconductor materials/devices like LEDs, lasers, solar cells, optical fibre, etc
based on the properties of their components.

EVALUATION: Attendance (5%), Assignments (10%), Continuous assessments (15%), and end
of semester examination (70%).
