VI. Concept notes with formative activities

There are different worldviews held by people. Worldview refers to a set of beliefs held by
the people about life and the universe.
Here are some of the worldviews:
 Atheistic- rejection on the existence of God
 Monism- no distinction between God and the world.
To begin with the study of world religion, one must need to know the difference between
the different key terms that would be used.
 Religion- is a set of organized beliefs held by people which consists of beliefs,
practices and traditions.
 Spirituality- it comes from the Greek word spiritus - which literally means “to
breathe.” It also means the application the teachings of your religion to your life. A
1
person who attend Mass every Sunday but does not apply the Gospel teaching in his
life is a person who is religious but not spiritual.
 Theology- it comes from the Greek word “theos” and “logos” which literally means
study of God.
 Philosophy of religion- a branch of philosophy which deals on the critical analysis of
religious practices; and usually it deals on topics such as good and evil. Belief in God
would be useless if it is not anchored on reason; thus, faith and reason goes hand in
hand to have a strong faith that could not be destroyed by challenges and adversities
in life.

 Take note, that knowing these terms will help you in your study of the different world
religions, as you will be able to learn and appreciate more your faith and the faith of
others. Thus, it would lead to harmonious relationship to people who belong to
different religions.

There are different elements of religion and spirituality. These elements are the
characteristics that define what a religion and spirituality is.
One of the elements of religion is ethics, which means that in every religion it provides
moral laws which is the basis of right and wrong. Another is community wherein every religion
has a community where their beliefs and practices are shared.
On the elements of spirituality: quest for meaning where people strive to know the
purpose of the existence and another is the quest for the sacred where people strive to know the
divine or to experience the divine reality.
