System Software (68-78)

- 2 Main Types of Software: System Software and Application Software

1. System Software
- System software includes Operating Systems and Utility Programs
- It’s a program that runs and controls computer hardware.
- It acts as a middle-man between [Application Software] and [Hardware]
- Provides a wide range functions, such as manage application and hardware / provide the user
with interface
- Graphical User Interface (GUI): User click icons to execute commands such as save, print,
enter, and so on.

• TYPES OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE

- 3 Types of System Software: Operating System, Utility Program, Translation Software

1.1) Operating system (OS): A program that enables [Application Software] to operate and
communicate with [Hardware]. Also provide all applications software to run.

- EXAMPLE: Computer: Windows, Mac OS, Linux

Mobile Phone: Android, IOS

1.2) Utility Program: Helps to ensure the computer runs as smoothly as possible.

- Anti-Virus Software
- Backup Software
- Hard Disk Scanners
- DIsk Defragmenters

1.3) Translation Software: Capable of translating instructions from one programming

language into another, so that the computer processor can understand and execute its tasks.
2. Application Software
- All programs that carry out useful tasks, such as word processors, database management
systems, spreadsheets, graphics software and so on.
- Application software must be written to run on a particular operating system.
- It doesn’t deal directly to [Hardware]. Instead, it passes information to the System Software

• Differences Between System Software and Application Software

SYSTEM SOFTWARE APPLICATION SOFTWARE

Interacts with.. Application Software, Hardware User, System Interface

Appears as.. “.exe” files GUI

Performs… General Purpose Tasks Specific task

- TV connects phone - Traffic light
- Laundry after finish drying - Projector
- Ticket scan
• Operating System Facilities

- There are 11 Commands/Facilities but only perform 1 OS

1. Batch Processing: You haven’t used the app but it is still running.
2. Real-Time Processing: What you’re using app right now.
3. Online Processing: Server (EX. YouTube: www.youtube.com.th , www.youtube.com.ph )
4. Offline Processing: You’re not connected online.
5. Process Control: 7-11 Automatic Door (With Sensor Temperature)
6. Networks: Online system/process (Google Login, TikTok Login)
7. Single Program: You’re using 1 OS (EX. Using Android phone)
8. Multi-Tasking/Programing: Phone Tabs/Multiple Apps [Clear All], or Computer [End Task]
9. Multi-User: Windows Users (Tab of Login accounts]
10. Multi-Processor: End Task to showing “Memory”
11. Multi-Access Processing

• User Interface

- 3 Types of User Interface

1. Command Line Interface: You typing the command what to do

2. Menu Driven Interface: Arrow keys, Cursor keys, ENTER keys
3. Graphical User Interface (GUI): Touchscreen, Navigate Mouse
Application Software (81-92)

- It helps users to perform particular tasks.

- Application software classified into 2 groups: Generic Software and Specially-Written Software

1. Generic Software
- It’s written for a general range of different purposes.
- Examples of Generic Software

1.1) Word Processing Software

- Word processor is a computer application that enables you to write, edit, format and
print any sort of printable document.

EXAMPLE: Microsoft Word, Wordpad, OpenOffice Writer

- [Spell Check]: Check your grammar and spelling.

- [Word Count]: Count the number of words you have written.

1.2) Electronic Spreadsheet Software

- Spreadsheet is a computer application that helps organize and analyze data in a

worksheet.
- Spreadsheet cell contains a formula that calculates values to the contents of any
other cell (or combination of cells) each time any cell is updated.
- It used in financial sector to generate reports
- Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet app written and distributed by Microsoft.
- The use of a macro programming language called VBA (Visual Basic for
Applications).
1.3) Database Management Software

- Database Management System (DBMS) is a set of software programs that manage

the organization, storage and retrieval of data in a database. It receives request info
and fetch request data from the database. One EXAMPLE is Microsoft Access.

1.4) Graphics Packages

- It’s application software used for viewing graphic files, editing images and graphic
design.

EXAMPLE: Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw

- GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an example of a free graphics editor

software. Its main function is to facilitate retour and editing an image. It allows
combining multiple images and converting between image formats. It creates basic
animations into GIFs.

1.5) Desktop Publishing (DTP)

- It combines specific types of software and enables you to collate text and graphics to
produce documents such as newsletters, brochures and books. It is a tool to create
visual communication material.
- Scribus is an EXAMPLE of free open-source desktop publishing software and used for
designing page layouts and editing.

1.6) Presentation Software

- It’s a computer application that displays pictures, videos and information in the form of a
slide show.
- EXAMPLE: Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple’s Keynote
- Keynote is a presentation software developed as part of iWork productivity by Apple.
(Feature special themes, transitions, animation, ability to control with IPhone or IPod touch)
2. Specially-Written Software
- It’s written for a specific purpose.

EXAMPLE: Student Database System is written specially to store information of students in

a school. (Include student’s addresses, grades, many others)

2.1) Stock Control software

- It’s used to keep track of stocks in warehouses.

2.2) Aircraft Navigation Software

- Pilots use Specially-Written Software to help navigate to destination

- It shows pilot the airplane's position, speed and altitude, and guides the pilot on
which route to take.

2.3) Traffic Light Control Software

- It controls the timing of traffic lights based on traffic conditions.

2.4) Hotel Booking Software

- Hotels use Specially-Written Software to keep track of room booking.

• Standalone Packages Versus Integrated Packages

- Generic Software can be divided into 2main categories

1. Standalone Packages are Generic Software which have a smaller range of functions.

EXAMPLE: Adobe Flash, used to create multimedia animations and interactive web elements

2. Integrated Packages are like a "Swiss army knife". They contain different parts which are
able to perform a wide range of functions.

EXAMPLE: Microsoft Works. Similar to Microsoft Office, but with more basic functions. (Less
powerful than Word but provides a greater variety of features)

Integrated packages are less common today because of the greater sophistication of
computer use and the wide variety of programs available the market.
• Other Software

1. Web Design Software

- Allows users to design and build websites.
- Using Software's Graphical Interface, users can easily put together elements such as text,
pictures, videos and sounds to build their website, without needing to write the programming
of themselves.
- Adobe Dreamweaver (formerly Macromedia Dreamweave): Web development
application, originally created by Macromedia. The most basic web design software in the
market.

2. Authoring Tool Software

- Refers to Computer-Based System that allows anyone to create learning content for
self-directed online learning. (Upload and create media without programming knowledge.
Provide a lot of graphics, interactivity, other tools)
- Authorwave: The lead visual authoring tools for creating media-rich-e-learning. It can be
converted into web-based.

3. Information Retrieval (IR)

- It is designed to search your computer and the Internet.

EXAMPLE: They can search information in documents, select documents within folders,
databases on the Internet. (Used to prevent an overload information, to scale indexes, speed
up access)

- Textalyser: IR text analysis tool that counts words, sentences, syllables, lexical density.
