Cost Price:
The price, at which an article is purchased, is called its cost price, abbreviated as C.P.
Selling Price:
The price, at which an article is sold, is called its selling prices, abbreviated as S.P.
Profit or Gain: If S.P. is greater than C.P., the seller is said to have a profit or gain.
Loss: If S.P. is less than C.P., the seller is said to have incurred a loss.
▪ Gain = (S.P.) - (C.P.)
▪ Loss = (C.P.) - (S.P.)
Loss or gain is always count on C.P.
Gain Percentage: (Gain %) Marked Price or List Price (MP or LP) and

2. A shirt was sold at 6% profit. If the purchase price was 4% less and the selling price
was Tk. 4 more, the profit would be 12.5%. What was the purchase price of the shirt?
A. Tk. 300 B. Tk. 400 C. Tk. 100 D. Tk. 200
Solution: Let the cost price is Tk. 100
At 6% profit, selling price = Tk. 106
At 4% less, cost price = Tk. 96 and earn 12.5% profit so, selling price= 96 +96*12.5%= Tk. 108
So, at 4% less cost price, profit is 108-106= Tk. 2

respectively. If he purchased a total of 11 pens and pencils for Tk. 200, how many pens
did he purchased? A. 6 pens B. 7 pens C. 8 pens D. 10 pens
Solution: Let, the trader purchased x number of pens and (11-x) number of pencils.
According to the question,
25x + 10(11-x) = 200
Or, 25x + 110 - 10x = 200 => 15x = 200 – 110 => 15x = 90 ∴ x = 6pens
2. Mr. Hasan has few notes of Tk. 10 and Tk. 50. A total of his 150 notes amount to Tk.
5100. What is the number of each kind of note?
A. 70, 80 B. 60, 90 C. 90, 50 D. 40, 20
Solution: Let, the number of 10 taka notes be x.
So, the number of 50 taka notes be (150-x)
According to the question,
10x+50(150-x) = 5100 => 10x+7500-50x = 5100 => -40x = -2400 => x = 60
The number of Tk. 10 notes = 60 and Tk. 50 notes = 150-60 = 90.
3. A man has Tk. 480 in the denominations of one-taka notes, five-taka notes and ten-
