These totals have been revised to include a number of previously unreported non-finishers. Similarly athletes who may have appeared on results as non-starters have
now been excluded from totals. In 1998-2003, it was possible for under-20s to start in both under-20 and senior races, so the sum of the rightmost four columns will give
a total greater that the number of actual athletes competing in those years. From 2004, the IAAF ruled that under-20 athletes may compete in one race only, which was
also the case up to 1997 (and from 2007) when all races were staged on one day. At the 2009 IAAF Congress, it was proposed that the championships should be held
every two years, alternating with area championships. This was approved by 132 votes to 32. In 2015 it was announced that the senior race distances were to be stan-
dardised at approximately 10Km for both men and women, while in August 2016, the IAAF Council decided on the introduction of a mixed relay race composed of two
men and two women per team running one loop of the course in any order.
