CASE STUDY QUESTIONS

1.Avneesh and Arushi decided to visit world book fair which is organised
every year. During their visit Arushi was fascinated by the cover page of a
book with π/e written on it. π and e are mathematical constants. In Euclidean
geometry π is defined as the ratio of circle’s circumference to its diameter. It
is also known as Archimede’s constant.

Using the knowledge of rational and irrational numbers, answer the following questions:
(i) What type of decimal expansion does π has?
(ii) What is the product of a non-zero rational and irrational number? Show with the help of an
example.
(iii)Find a rational number between √2 and √3.

2. Mr. Amit, a Mathematics teacher explained some key points of unit 1 of

class IX to his students. Some are given here.
● There are infinite rational numbers between any two rational numbers.
● Rationalisation of a denominator means to change the irrational
denominator to rational form.
● A number is irrational if its decimal form is non-terminating non-
recurring.
On the basis of these key points, answer the following questions

(i) What is the reciprocal of 2 + √3 after rationalisation?

(ii) Simplify √3 + √7) (√3 − √7)

4
(iii)Express 7 in decimal form and state the kind of decimal expansion.

3. Students of class IX are on visit of Sansad Bhawan. Teacher

assigned them the activity to observe and take some pictures to
analyse the seating arrangement between various MP and speaker
based on coordinate geometry. The staff tour guide explained various
facts related to Mathematics of Sansad Bhawan to the students.
Students were surprised when teacher asked them to apply coordinate
geometry on the seating arrangement of MP's and speaker. Based on
the information and referring the below image and graph, answer the
following questions:
(i)What are the coordinates of position ‘F’?
(ii)In which quadrant, the point ‘C’ lies?
(iii)Find the perpendicular distance of the point E from the y-axis.
4. On the occasions of `Diwali' a rectangular plot have been
allotted for 'Diwali Mela' to students of secondary school in
Hyderabad. In order to reduce smog and pollution they decided to
keep little leaf linden plant on the boundary at a distance of 1 m
from each other. Four air purifier machines have also been set up at
points L, M, N, O. (Answer the following questions considering A
as origin).
(i) What are the coordinates of L?
(ii) What are the coordinates of N?
(iii)Find the perpendicular distance of M from y-axis.
5. “Charity is the humanitarian act of giving help to those who need
it.” Keeping the same in mind, Radha distributed chocolates in an
orphanage, on her birthday. She gave 5 chocolates to each child and
total 20 chocolates to adults.
(i) Write a linear equation, in standard form as ax + by + c = 0 for
the above situation. (Taking number of children as x and total chocolates distributed as y)
(ii) What is the total number of chocolates if the number of children is 18?
(iii) Find the value of b, if x = 5, y = 0 is a solution of the equation 3x + 5y = b.
6. Aditya, a Grade IX student went to the market to purchase ‘a’ kg of
potato and ‘b’ kg of peas at the rate of Rs ‘x’ and Rs ‘y’ respectively. The
total amount spent was Rs. 150. After reaching home, he tries to form a
linear equation in two variables for the same. Help Aditya with the
following questions
(i) Represent the above situation in linear equations in two variables?
(ii) Find a solution for the equation formed in (i) if he purchased 4 kg of potato and 2 kg of peas.
(iii) For what value of k, x = 2 and y = -1 is a solution of x + 3y -k = 0.
7. In my colony a park is situated in front of my house. This
park has built in shape of triangle (ABC) with the following
sides 120m, 80m and 50m. Now-a-days, some animals entered
park and destroy and eat plants. So, our ward member of area
has decided to put railing around the park for protecting plants
and grass. Ward member ordered to a gardener to place a railing
all around this park and maintain grass inside park. He also
sanctioned an amount to improve park in a proper way for
public of that colony. Costing is decided Rs. 10 per meter for railing around the park.
(i) What is the perimeter of the park?

as well as students to organize Marathon Running on 2nd October in
memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Both teachers and students of school
dramatically made a gathering for spotlessness drive. They walked
throughout the following paths in two groups. One group walked through
the paths PQ QR and RP whereas the other through PR, RT and TP (As
shown in figure). Then they ran over the area enclosed within their paths. If
PQ = 7m, QR = 30m, RT =10m, TP = 25m and ∠Q = 90°.
Analyze the above information and answer the following questions:
(i) What is the value of longest path which is covered by Marathon participants?
(ii) Find the value area of triangle PQR in which first group is running Marathon?
(iii) How much area is covered by Group 2 of triangles PRT?
