INTRODUCTION
Writing your opinion is one of the most satisfying things to do. This is because you give a
piece of your mind to a certain topic. By writing about your opinions, you will be able to leave a
certain impression to your readers.

However, it could be difficult sometimes since we may have a lot of ideas, but we have
limited knowledge and experience in expressing them. That is why we need to practice writing to
improve.

LESSON TARGETS
Through this module, may you enhance your writing ability for further endeavors. Keep
today’s lesson targets in mind as we go through today’s session:

□ To write a 4-5 paragraph (250 words) opinion essay following the suggested structure

B. DEVELOPING THE SKILL

Activity #2: Content Notes: Read and study the concept notes below. HIghlight any important
information.

A good opinion essay must have a well-defined thesis statement (main topic), solid reasons
for your claim (supporting details), and a clear conclusion. To give a more organized essay, a
suggested structure is given below.

1st Paragraph (Introduction)

● First sentence – Paraphrase the question
● Second Sentence- State your argument/ claim and cite how many reasons you do
have to support your claim.
2nd Paragraph (Main Body 1)
● First Sentence- 1st reason why you agree or disagree
● Second to Third Sentences- Explanation (supporting details)
● Last Sentence- give an example to your claim
3rd Paragraph (Main Body 2)
● First Sentence- 2nd reason why you agree or disagree
● Second to Third Sentences- Explanation (supporting details)
● Last Sentence- give an example to your claim
4th Paragraph (Conclusion)
● Summarize your main points briefly
● Restate your opinion

Example:
Question: Space exploration is much too expensive, and the money should be spent on more important
things. What is your opinion?

There is an argument that exploring space is a waste of money and that there are more
urgent needs to be addressed on earth, such as reducing poverty and preventing environmental
destruction. However, I completely disagree with this opinion for two reasons.

First, many of the technologies we take for granted today originated from space research.
Take satellite technology, for example, which we depend on for broadcasting and weather
forecasting. Without satellites, we would not be able to follow global events as they happen, nor
give populations any warning of approaching storms. Space research has also led to the
development of new lightweight materials that offer us heat protection and enable food
preservation. Therefore, the challenge of sending human beings into space has often driven the
development of new technologies that benefit our everyday lives.
Second, we cannot foresee the distant future, so we ought to develop the capability to
escape from the earth. Gradually, we are learning how humans can survive for long periods in
space and even travel to other planets in the future. If space exploration is halted, this valuable
knowledge will never be acquired. It is true that environmental destruction is also a serious issue,
but it is also true that we remain dependent on our environment if we never accept the challenge
of exploring other worlds.
In conclusion, while we undoubtedly face serious problems on our own planet, it is
imperative that we continue to explore space. This will promote further technological advances as
well as provide a possible means of escape should earth become uninhabitable in the future.
Ideally, all nations should cooperate in the advancement of space research.

Activity #3: Write! (30 mins)

In no less than 250 words, give your opinion on the statement provided. Follow the format
that has been discussed and observe proper spacing of the paragraphs, correct sentence

intelligence. What is your opinion on this matter? (Use another sheet of paper if needed.)
