What is weather
What is weather?

You see the weather when you look out of your window or
stand outside. Is it sunny? Is it raining, cold or hot? Is the
wind blowing? These are all features of the weather.
The amount of rain falling in
a day, the hours of sunlight,
the temperature, and the
wind are all abiotic factors
of our environment that we
observe and measure.
The weather on the ground
is the result of factors in the
atmosphere around us.
Changes in air pressure
affect wind direction and
strength.
What is weather?

Humidity (the amount of water

in the air) and air temperature
affect how many clouds we see,
and how much precipitation we
get.
Some combinations of
atmospheric conditions cause
massive thunderstorms,
hurricane-force winds, heat
waves, or droughts.

Weather is the mix of

atmospheric events taking
place in a particular place at a
particular time.
Predicting the weather

Weather scientists
look at changes in
the atmosphere, and
other weather
features such as
rainfall, wind speed
and direction, and
hours of sun.
They observe and
record readings
from weather They use this information to
stations across each produce weather forecasts,
country. predicting the weather for the next
days and weeks
Weather is local

Sometimes the
weather is the same
across a whole
country, but often it
is very local.

Features like hills,

mountains, and lakes
change how the
atmosphere behaves.
Classwork
Hassim is planning a birthday party for his
daughter. He wants the children to play outside.
He looks at the national weather forecast to help
him choose which day to hold the party.

a. Explain why it is a good idea for Hassim to

look at the national weather forecast to help
choose a party day.

b. Explain why Hassim must not rely on the

national weather forecast when he makes his
plans.

What is the difference

between weather and
climate?
Weather or Climate?

If it is sunnier than usual, or you get a lot of rain, is the

weather changing, or the climate? Are weather and
climate the same thing?
What is climate?

Scientists look at
average weather
conditions over
years, centuries or
even thousands of
years to measure the
climate of a region.

Climate describes
the long-term
weather patterns in
an area.
Global Climates

The climate where you live gives you a

good idea of the weather you can
expect. For example, in tropical
climates, the temperatures are high all
year round, and there is a lot of sun and
a lot of rain. Tropical climates often
experience very strong winds, tropical
storms and hurricanes.

In contrast, in a temperate climate,

temperatures change by 30°C or more
between summer and winter - and
hurricanes are very rare events. There
are a number of climatic zones around
the world. In each zone the weather
varies from day to day, but the pattern
of the climate will be the same every
year.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather and climate both involve
factors such as rainfall, winds, sunshine,
humidity and temperature. They are
closely related, but they are not the
same thing. People often get confused
between them.
If it is hot and sunny when you look
outside, that is the weather today. All
over the world, people have weather in
common. Sun, wind, and even rain will be
part of your life, wherever you live.

Climate looks at patterns in the weather

over long time periods. Climate tells you
the type of weather to expect. Different
parts of the world have different climates
- unlike weather, we do not all share the
same experiences.

Climate is what you expect; weather is what

you get.
Does the climate change?

You know that the

weather changes from
day to day but it is easy
to think that climate
stays the same.

If you live in an arid

climate, you do not
expect regular rain
showers! But over the
history of our planet,
the climate has
changed many times
Classwork

1. Name three climatic zones, and describe the

main weather patterns of each.

2. The temperature at the surface of the Earth

is rising in all climatic regions, from the polar
ice to the tropics. Is this statement true.
