EDM™ database on a SQL Server and Oracle Server.
This document is intended for IT administrators and EDT™ users of all levels of experience; the
installation guide is most likely to help experienced IT administrators perform advanced
installations.
Refer to the Engineer’s Desktop™ Software Version 17.2 Release Notes for Enhancements,
Known, and Fixed Issues.

Engineer’s Desktop™ 17.2 Installation Guide

Important Considerations
The licensing system has been upgraded to use the LGCX system. You will need new
license features to continue to use the EDT applications if you are upgrading to version
17.2.00 from a 5000.1.13 or older version. Contact a Landmark Account Manager to obtain
new licenses for the 17.2.00 release.

Licensing
Licensing allows controlled use of Landmark applications in network, local, or stand-alone
environments. When you purchase a Landmark application, you also purchase one or more
licenses, which give users the right to use the application. The number of licenses an application
has determines the number of users who access the application concurrently. Before running
Engineer’s Desktop™ software, you must have a valid license environment. This may mean you
are accessing or pointing to a valid license server. If you are unsure or need help, see your System
Administrator or contact Landmark Customer Support.
• For more information about Landmark licensing, refer to the Landmark Application
Manager Guide on Landmark Software Manager.
• You must obtain the LGCX 17.2.00 Release license file from Landmark® Graphics
Corporation prior to running this release. To obtain a license file you can use the link in the
Landmark Software Manager or contact Customer Support on page 20.

Microsoft Security Warnings When Installing

• A security warning may appear when trying to install software, due to security restrictions
imposed by recent Microsoft security updates:
• “Security Warning: Do you want to run this software?” Simply click Run to proceed with
the EDM software installation.

Data Execution Prevention

Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses and other threats.
However, some programs may not run correctly when this is turned on. If there is a conflict, you
will see an error similar to this:

It is recommended that Data Execution Prevention be set to “Turn on DEP for essential Windows
programs and services only”.
Other Requirements Page 6 of 23 February 2023

To set DEP:
1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Select Properties > Advanced tab.
3. Under Performance, click the Settings button. Select Data Execution Prevention tab.
4. Select Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.
5. Click OK.

Russian Language Configuration

For Windows 10 operating systems, ensure that the region is set to English when installing the
software. Post-installation open the Region and Language dialog, and change the language to
Russian for Keyboards and Languages.
Note:
If the language is not set to English, some of the features such as the Fluid Positions Animation plot in
Hydraulics will not work as expected and may display the following message when the feature is run:
“Object reference not set to an instance of an object”
Change the region language to English and then reinstall the software to resolve this.

Setting the License File Manually

Perform these steps either before or immediately after the Engineer’s Desktop™ installation.
Note:
The instructions below are for a license file that resides on your local computer. You can, however,
connect to a network license. Follow the instructions in the Landmark Application License Installation
Guide for instructions on network licenses.
Please see all of the Licensing notes above, in the Important Considerations for Installation and
Licensing section. If you have any questions about installing a license, please see your IT department,
or Landmark Support.

1. Obtain a license file from Landmark Graphics.

2. If the file is not called license.dat, rename it to license.dat.
3. Place the license file on your computer in a directory where it will not be erased. For example,
you could copy the file to a Landmark_Licenses directory.
4. Set an environment variable that will point to the license file. Open the Control Panel by
clicking the Windows Start button > Control Panel.
5. Select System and security, then select System on the Control Panel. Click Advanced
system settings on the upper left of the screen.
6. Click the link. The System Properties dialog box displays.
7. Click the Environment Variables button.
This dialog is divided into two sections: User variables on the top and System variables below
that.
8. Click the New button under System variables.
9. Type LM_LICENSE_FILE for the Variable name.
10. For the Variable value, do one of the following:
• Type the full path of the license file and the license file name (license.dat).
• Type the license server information for your LAM server installation. For example,
C:/Landmark_License/license.dat.
• If the license file resides on a LAM server, type the server port and name in the
variable value.
For example, [email protected].
License Notes:
If there are redundancy servers use a semi-colon to separate each license location for example,
2013@ServerName1; 2013@ServerName2; 2013@ServerName3;

11. Click the OK the buttons for the New System Variable, Environment Variables, and System
Properties dialog boxes.
