Polynomial Function

Determine whether each expression is a polynomial or not.

What is polynomial function?
A polynomial function has all of its variables with exponents which are positive integers. It is not
a polynomial function if a variable has a negative exponent or if the exponent is a fraction.
A POLYNOMIAL is a monomial or a sum of monomials. A POLYNOMIAL IN ONE VARIABLE is a
polynomial that contains only one variable.
Example: 5 + 3x - 7
Which of the following are polynomial functions?

𝟒 −𝟐
𝒇 ( 𝒙 ) =𝒙 − 𝒙 +𝟐 𝒙 − 𝟗

𝒇 ( 𝒙 ) =𝟓 𝒙 + 𝒙 − 𝟐 √ 𝒙 −𝟗
𝟓 𝟒

𝟒 𝟐
𝒇 ( 𝒙 ) =𝟒 𝒙 −𝟑 𝒙 +𝟖

𝒇 𝒙 =𝟐 𝒙 ( 𝒙+𝟐)(𝒙 −𝟑)

What is degree?
The degree of one variable polynomial is the largest
power on any term in the polynomial.
What is the degree of the following functions?
The Leading Coefficient
The polynomial function has a leading coefficient.
Once the function is written in descending order of
degree, the leading coefficient is the coefficient of the
term with the highest degree.
Find the leading coefficient and degree of each polynomial
function.

Addition: Subtraction:
(f - g)=f(x)‐ g(x)
(f+g)=f(x)+g(x)

Multiplication: Division
(f•g)=f(x)•g(x)
Addition:
