SESSION GUIDE
Subject: PATHFIT 1 MOVEMENT ENHANCEMENT
Content: Motor Learning and Motor Control in the different programs of Physical Education
PE PROGRAM: Individual, Dual & Combative Sports
Focus Topic: Tai chi Jian/ Jianshu (Tai chi sword)

Date: August 5, 2019


Learning Intent:
At the end of the session, the students can:
1. Demonstrate and refine activity-specific movement skills in Taichi Jian/ Jianshu.
2. Analyze Chinese movement concepts and principles (e.g., YINYANG, force,
motion, rotation) to improve performance of self and/or others in the execution
of Taichi Jian/ Jianshu routines.
3. Create a series of steps to complete the Group Taichi Jian/ Jianshu Routine.
4. Exhibit proper etiquette, respect for others, and teamwork while engaging in the
selected physical activity.
5. Use communication skills and strategies that promote team/group dynamics

Session flow (in-class)

I. Priming Activity (Context)

In each group, using the think-group-share strategy, students will answer the following questions
(answer the table using key words/ concepts) based on the video excerpt:

1. What is the origin/ history of Taichi Jian/ Jianshu Form?


2. What Chinese movement concepts Philosophies are embedded in the movement execution
of Taichi Jian/ Jianshu routines?
3. While watching the video, what kind of movements have you seen?
4. What anatomical terms of motion can you readily identify in the athlete’s movements?
5. What movement patterns or shapes or animal-like postures/ gestures were created while
going through the motions of the dance?

II. Activity (Experience)


The groups will choose from the following creative presentations:
1. Through a “Chinese Teleserye/ Chinese Drama/ Peking Opera” style “, discuss briefly the
origin/ history of Taichi Jian/ jianshu form.
2. Through a TALK SHOW, discuss the kind of movements you have seen, and identify the
anatomical terms of motion utilized in the athlete’s movements, with Jet Li, Jacky Chan,
Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, Michelle Yeoh, and the like as your guests.
3. Through a “CCTV News Reporting (in English),” discuss what and how movement patterns
or shapes were created (as seen in the video) while going through the motions of the dance.
4. Through a “KAPUSO MO, JESSICA SOHO/ RATED K” Telemagazine/ Documentary
presentation, discuss the Chinese movement concepts and Philosophies embedded in the
movement execution of Taichi Jian/ Jianshu routines.
5. Through a SIMULATION of “Kung Fu/ Wuxia/ Chinese Martial Arts Movie” depict the
Animal-like postures/ gestures of typical taichi jian/ jianshu routine (saying or calling out
the names of each stance and mimic how Bruce Lee, Jacky Chan or Jet Li does it).

III. Analysis

1. How does it feel like being Jet Li or Jacky Chan or Bruce Lee?
2. How did you come up with your presentation? (Process involved in conceptualizing and
creating the product)
3. Is your product useful in the creation of your routines later? How?
4. What does it mean to “follow Chinese movement concepts/ principles/ philosophies” in
executing the movements?
5. How are the movements executed? Has it anything to do with yinyang?

IV. Abstraction

simulation of animal-like gestures
