In this practice, you will apply what you have learned in the lesson. Answer the
questions below. Submit this to your teacher when you are done.

Scientists make predictions about the natural world, called hypotheses. They
then test these hypotheses using experimental or observational investigations.
After testing hypotheses, scientists report their results and conclusions in an
article that is published in a scientific journal. Often, other writers summarize
these results and conclusions in articles written for nonscientists. Reference the
first article, "Changing Ocean Chemistry," to answer questions 1 through 3.

1. Summarize the following points from the Web site. (8 points)

The ocean's chemistry has been changing due to

human-driven increases in carbon dioxide levels in the
atmosphere. The ocean absorbs this carbon dioxide,
which changes the ocean's chemistry and makes it more
acidic

a. What did the scientists in the article study? (2 points)

Marine life and the sea

b. What were the experimental methods that the scientists used? (2 points)
observation
c. According to the article, what did the scientists predict would happen during
their experiment? (In other words, what was their original hypothesis?) (2
points)
they had expected the ear bones to shrink rather than grow in
co2 concentrations.
d. What were the results of this study? (2 points)
higher atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could lead to changes
in fish anatomy involved in navigation.
2. How might the results from this study help scientists to understand how
ocean life could change as ocean chemistry changes? (3 points)
Different abnominations might appear on different marine life and more evolutions may occur
3. How could you verify the information in this article? (2 points)
The article author is verified and uses primary sources
Scientists publish the results of their investigations in scientific journals. The
articles in these journals are reviewed by other scientists before they are published.
Articles in scientific journals are harder to read than summary articles. However,
journal articles contain all of the information needed to understand what happened
in a scientific investigation. In order to understand a scientific article, it helps to
know what type of information each part of the article contains. Download the
scientific article about smoking that is in the Web site linked in this activity.
Reference the second article, "The Effects of Air Pollution and Smoking," to answer
questions 4 through 8.

4. What was tested during this investigation? Where did you find this information?
(2 points)
The study described the research of the effects that the environment pollution and
smoking have in cadmium concentration in human blood, as well as in the correlation
between cadmium and the biochemical parameters.
5. What are the main sections of this paper? (3 points)
problem statement, approach, results and conclusion.

6. What section would you read if you wanted to know the basic methods, results,
and conclusions from this paper? Explain. (2 points)
I would read the results and approach, since thats where most of the information
of a experiment is summarized in.
7. What would you need to pay closest attention to in this paper if you were a
researcher who was trying to repeat the investigation? Explain. (2 points)
I would focus on the conclusion, since my experiment results should be similar to the already
researched topic.
8. Why do you think the researchers chose to investigate the topic in the
article? How could these results be used to improve human health? (3 points)
This can convince most teens to stop smoking and make anti smoking laws
across the United States
