ESTIMATION OF PARAMETERS
Lesson 4.2. Computing the Point Estimate of a
Population Mean
THREE TYPES OF ESTIMATION
Unbiased – estimate is within the value of the mean.
POINT ESTIMATOR
Counts how many times data
occurs (frequency) Good for
small amounts of data
DEFINITION OF TERMS
POPULATION MEAN
SAMPLE MEAN
- is an average of a sample of size n.
- is best used for interval and ratio
with symmetrical data as levels of
measurement.
EXAMPLE OF SAMPLE MEAN

DEFINITION OF TERMS
SAMPLE MEAN
Let there be a sample of size 𝑛, with 𝑛
independent random variables ሺ𝑋1 + 𝑋2 +
𝑋3 … 𝑋𝑛 ሻeach coming from the random sample.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
SAMPLE MEDIAN
• is the middle value of an ordered array of a
sample of size n.
• is best used for interval and ratio with skewed
data as levels of measurement.
EXAMPLE OF SAMPLE MEDIAN

DEFINITION OF TERMS
SAMPLE MEDIAN
First arrange a sample size of n in a manageable
order, then count it to know whether it is odd or even.

SAMPLE MODE
• is the value that frequently occurs among a
random sample of size n.
• is used for nominal or categorical value.
value is not important because it is assumed as a
descriptive category.
EXAMPLE OF SAMPLE MODE
EXAMPLE OF SAMPLE MODE
DEFINITION OF TERMS
SAMPLE MODE
• Compute by observing or counting the number of
times each value appeared in a random sample of
size n and comparing which is the most often value
in the sample.
• For large samples of data, arrange from smallest to
largest value to see which most often appears.

YOUR TURN!
1. A teacher wants to find the average
score for a student in his class. The
teacher's sample set has eight different
test scores:
78, 89, 93, 95, 88, 78, 95, 97.
