Name: ______________________________________ Date: ____________________

Grade: ______________________________________ Section: ___________________

Quarter: __4__ Week: __4__ MELC: Uses appropriate graphs to

represent organized data: pie chart,
bar graph and line graph. (M7SPIVd-e1)
➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Grade 7 Math: Learner’s Material
➢ Chapter: _38__ Pages: 239-244 Topic: Organizing and Presenting Data
➢ Objectives:
1. To determine the types of graphs to represent organized data.
2. To construct graphs: pie chart, bar graph, line graph.

Let Us Discover

Information is often more effectively conveyed using pictures rather than

words. Pictures which convey quantitative information are called graphs.
Graphs used to represent organized data

1. Pie chart (Circle graph) - a circle divided into sectors proportional to the
frequencies. It shows the division of a whole into its parts. It is used to
show the percentage of a quantity in each of the several categories.
Example 1. The number of students enrolled in Maxilum High School
S.Y 2020-202 are as follows: Grade 7 – 100 Grade 8 – 150
Grade 9 – 200 Grade 10 – 50
✓ The most appropriate graph to use is pie chart because it will immediately
show the part-to-whole comparison and there are few data involved.
Steps in representing data using pie graph:
a. Organize the data in tabular form.
b. Convert each data (number of students) into percent.
c. Compute the number of degrees for each category. Remember, circle has 360°.
d. Using a compass and a protractor, draw a circle, divide it into sector according
to percentage of data. Label each sector. (See illustration below)
Grade level No. of students Percent (%) Angle measure (°)
Grade 7 100 (100 ÷ 500)(100) = 20% .20(360°) = 72°
Grade 8 150 (150 ÷ 500)(100) = 30% .30(360°) = 108°
Grade 9 200 (200 ÷ 500)(100) = 40% .40(360°) = 144°
Grade 10 50 (50 ÷ 500)(100) = 10% .10(360°) = 36°
TOTAL 500 100% 360°

2. Bar graph - uses parallel bars of different lengths and of equal widths. It is either
horizontal or vertical to represent counts for several categories.
Example 2. Xyda surveyed 50 Grade 7 Hyacinth students about their favorite
subject. The result of the survey are as follows:
English 4 TLE 3

y-axis (vertical line)

Vertical Bar graph
Math 6 ESP 9
Science 5 AP 6
Filipino 10 MAPEH 7
✓ The most appropriate graph for this data
is bar graph.

Steps in constructing bar graph:

a. Decide what data must be on the y-axis
and on the x-axis. Show the scale on both x-axis (horizontal line)
axes. Select convenient scale unit.
Horizontal Bar graph
➢ Y-axis: Number of votes
➢ X-axis: Subjects
b. Draw the bars. Bars should be
proportional to the quantities they
represent and should have uniform width.
Give uniform space between bars.
c. Label your graph (title and the axes)
➢ Title: Favorite Subjects of Grade
7 Hyacinth Students
3. Line graph - is a kind of graph that uses lines to show the trends, patterns or
changes over a period of time.
Example 3. Althea saved the money gave by her parents for 4 weeks.
✓ The most appropriate graph for this data is line Week Savings
graph because it will clearly show how the data 1st 20
changes over time. 2nd 15
Steps in constructing line graph: 3rd 25
a. Draw the lines for the x-axis and the y-axis. 4th 30
b. Use the data from the table to label the axes.
c. Plot the points that corresponds to the week
number and savings.
d. Connect the points by a line segment.
e. Put a title on the graph.

Let Us Try

Activity 1: Guess What? Determine what type of graph will be used to represent the
data in the given problems.
________1.) Being sick, Elaine listed her body temperature for 5 days.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5

37.9 ℃ 38.2 ℃ 37.8 ℃ 37.5 ℃ 37.0 ℃

________2.) The members of the Seniors Club elected their officers. There are 4
candidates for President and 100 members voted. This is the result of the election:
Rey 25 votes, Rhea 5 votes, Roland 20 votes and Robert 50 votes.

Activity 2: Make It! Marie surveyed 100 people about their most used mobile phone
applications during this pandemic. The top 5 most used apps were Tiktok (T) 20,
Facebook(F) 35, Messenger(M) 30, Instagram(I) 5 and Netflix(N) 10. Use an
appropriate graph to represent the data.
✓ The most appropriate graph is bar graph. Follow the steps in constructing bar
graph.
a. The x and y axes are already shown in
the right.
b. On the x-axis is the phone applications. 50
On the y-axis is the number of people voted 40
on that particular apps.
c. Now, it’s time for you to draw the bars. 30
d. Write the title of your graph. Label it properly. 20

Activity 3: Construct It!

The Math club of GSCNHS conducted Math Olympics 2021. Team Slytherin
won the following games with the corresponding prizes. Construct an appropriate
chart or graph which represent these data. Use separate sheet of paper.

Activity/game Prize
Speed Cubing Php 80
Team Quiz Php 200
Individual Quiz Php 80
Math Trail Php 400
Sudoku Challenge Php 40

Activity 4: Apply It!

Apply your learning in constructing graphs. Organize and present your first
grading grades using an appropriate chart or graph. Use separate sheet of paper.
