What is REGEX?
Regex (short for Regular Expressions) is a tool to search, match, and manipulate text based on patterns.

Why Use Regex in Excel?

Quickly find and replace text.
Extract specific parts of text.
Validate data formats (like emails or phone numbers).

Basic Symbols

. (Dot): Matches any single character (except newline).

Example: a.c matches abc, a1c, a-c.

* (Asterisk): Matches zero or more of the preceding character.

Example: a* matches ``, a, aa.

+ (Plus): Matches one or more of the preceding character.

Example: a+ matches a, aa, but not ``.

? (Question Mark): Matches zero or one of the preceding character.

Example: a? matches ``, a.

^ (Caret): Matches the start of a string.

Example: ^a matches a at the start of the string.

$ (Dollar Sign): Matches the end of the string.

Example: a$ matches a at the end.
Referencing Capturing Groups in Replacements: In REGEXREPLACE, $1, $2, etc., refer to the text
matched by the first, second, etc., capturing group in the pattern.

\ (Backslash): Escapes special characters (makes them literal).

Example: \. matches a literal dot.

Character Classes

[ ] (Square Brackets): Matches any one character inside the brackets.

Example: [abc] matches a, b, or c.
[a-z]: Matches any lowercase letter.
[0-9]: Matches any digit.

[^ ] (Caret inside brackets): Matches any character not inside the brackets.
Example: [^abc] matches any character except a, b, or c.

Common Patterns
 \d: Matches any digit (same as [0-9]).
\D: Matches any non-digit.
\w: Matches any word character (letters, digits, underscore).
\W: Matches any non-word character.
\s: Matches any whitespace (spaces, tabs).
\S: Matches any non-whitespace.

Groups and Ranges

( ) (Parentheses): Groups characters together, remembers the match.

Example: (abc) matches abc.

| (Pipe): Matches either the pattern before or after the pipe.

Example: a|b matches a or b.

{ } (Curly Braces): Matches a specific number of occurrences.

Example: a{2} matches aa.

Tips

Test your patterns on sample data.

Start with simple patterns and gradually add complexity.
Use AI tools like ChatGPT and BING CoPilot for REGEX patterns
