Definition
The term group can be defined in a number of different ways, depending on the perspective
that is taken.
Stephen P Robins: “Two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, who have come
together to achieve particular objectives.”
Group refers to a collection of two or more individuals who interact with each other, share
common goals, and perceive themselves as a cohesive unit.
In modern days, people need not physically come together, but they communicate and interact
with each other. They strive for a common goal which become a bondage. The members of
the group share their skills and other resources and achieve their goals through the integrated
efforts.
Types:

 Formal group: A designated work group defined by an organization’s structure.


Examples include project teams, committees, and work units.
Characteristics:
o Is an official formation.
o It have structured roles.
o It have clear objectives.
o It have defined communication channels.
o Have official leadership.
o Possesses accountability for actions.
 Informal group: A group that is neither formally structured nor organizationally
determined; such a group appears in response to the need for social contact.
Examples of informal groups include lunch groups, social clubs, or groups formed
around common interests such as sports, hobbies, or shared backgrounds.
Characteristics:
o They are formed voluntarily.
o Primary focus in social interaction.
o It possesses a fluid structure.
o They are formed around a common interest.
o It contain informal communication.
 Task Groups: Task groups are formed with the specific purpose of achieving a
particular job or project. Members collaborate to accomplish a shared objective, and
the group dissolves once the task is complete.
 Interest Groups: Interest groups form around shared hobbies, concerns, or activities
within the organization. These groups contribute to the social aspects of the
workplace and may influence informal communication.
 Friendship Groups: Friendship groups are based on personal relationships and social
interactions among members. These groups provide emotional support and contribute
to a positive work environment.
 Reference Groups: Reference groups are those that individuals use as benchmarks for
evaluating their own attitudes, behaviors, and values. Colleagues, supervisors, or
other work-related groups can serve as reference groups.
