Think about a time when you have been negatively affected by social media.

In this
day and age, this happens more often than not.

Through the role of new technology becoming a more widespread use in the
general public. Many children born in the past 2 decades are now experiencing the
use of technology and especially social media at significantly younger ages. Whilst
social media can provide many benefits upon usage, there are many harmful
downsides that it creates. Although children on social media should not banned, the
ability to utilize online monitoring and limit online media use is essential to protect
the well-being of children.
Due to the rapid rise of misinformation being held within the internet and social
media. Many children are also being exposed to false and dangerous information.
With still-developing brains, children are the main targets of being misled and
persuaded into believing the lies educated on these platforms. An article written by
‘Scientific American’ stated that misinformation “has had a severe, growing impact
on students over the past 10 years.” The article highlighted real teachers'
experiences regarding this topic. One teacher even stated that some of her students
denied the events of both the holocaust and COVID-19 as a hoax.

Alongside the age of social media, rates of depression and anxiety within
adolescents have increased dramatically. With these rates rising to almost 16% of all
adolescents in America, in 2019. Many factors may be attributed to this, however
many researches conducted have linked this mental health crisis to social media.
Alongside induced online peer pressure. The internet has additionally created
another form of bullying known as cyberbullying. In which technology is used to
harass, target, and/or threaten another person online. Statistics posted by esafety
Commissioner Australia, reveals that 44% of all Australian adolescents have
experienced cyberbullying within the last 6 months. Including 15% of people who
have been threatened or experienced continuous abuse online.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media platforms such as TikTok, saw a
substantial rise in users and user interaction. Many kids during this period, resorted
to using these websites as a form of entertainment and in turn, demonstrated how
easy it is for children online to be persuaded into committing reckless actions.
Throughout the continuous quarantine in late 2020, a new and popular challenge
called the “blackout challenge” soon became deadly. Killing a total of 20 children
under the age of 14. With this girl being one of the victims. An article written by
‘Pedi Mum talks about the different types of challenges on social media and the
reason behind the epidemic of children attempting these challenges. Mainly linking
the underdeveloped brains of children as the biggest reason. The article states that
the lateral prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision making is underdeveloped
within the adolescent period. If these children’s online activity was monitored.
These tragedies could have been avoided.

Whilst social media has many downsides, it also revolutionized the ability to
communicate and interact with peers online. It allows people to enjoy different
activities and stay in touch with others all around the world. A piece authored by
‘internetmatters.org’ stated that social media can create a sense of “community”
online. However, this community is brought alongside the many other dangers
online stated before. Dangers such as cyberbullying and even online predators.

As social media and the internet become more prevalent in our modern-day society.
The use of technology by children needs to be monitored and limited. Although
children on social media should not be banned, these simple precautions will help
ensure the safety of children around the world.
